American Idol is growing to meet the needs of its loyal fan base by creating its own social network to compete with MySpace and Facebook. Season eight of American Idol premiered Tuesday and the launch of MyIdol on AmericanIdol.com is all new, too.

MyIdol has a more user friendly interface to compliment the primetime mega hit. Navigation has been cleaned up and a new drop down menu quickly brings American Idol fans to forums, bogs, social networking profiles and more.

The MyIdol social community allows American Idol fans to create online profiles, post their own individual avatars, exchange messages with other AmericanIdol.com users and invite others to be one of their online friends. The new American Idol website also allows users to create interest groups to connect with fellow MyIdol community members.

The new American Idol homepage is loaded with photos and video documenting the journeys of favorite Idol contestants and their performances. And coming soon, MyIdol members will be able to visit the American Idol games center, download themes for their profiles and download fun applications for mobile devices.

Ratings for the season eight premiere of American Idol were down from last year, averaging 30.1 million viewers. Season seven brought in an astounding 33.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Oh Lord, I misread that headline to read: American Idol Embraces Social Networking with Midol! I am hoping they reconsider that name because MyIdol and Midol are very close in spelling!
