'American Idol' Episode 3: Milwaukee Singers Rocked the House

After watching "American Idol" episode 3, I came to the same conclusion I had after watching episodes 1 and 2. "American Idol" has a fresh new format that works. The new "American Idol" has returned to a three person set up, which is good. But now it's even better than that. Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez are entertainers with years of experience, but they also add an entertaining element to the show that is great to see.

The new style is so refreshing that Randy Jackson, the original judge, seems stuck in the old format. He's no Simon Cowell, but he'll have to be the mean one with "Dawg, that was horrible."

Not Tyler or Lopez. Yes, they let a singer know if he lacks skills, but they let him down gently. Lopez respectfully tells a singer, "It's a no," and Tyler approaches everything with a great sense of humor and crazy style that we love about him.

What I also like about the new "American Idol" is the focus on the good singers and not the bad during these early days. Isn't that what "American Idol" should be about - good singing? Highlighting terrible singers may be good for comic relief, but it shouldn't be the focus.

Speaking of good singers, there were quite a few that came out in Milwaukee for "American Idol" Episode 3. Some of my favorites:

Jerome Bell. The guy who sings at weddings and Bar Mitzvahs sang a version of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On." I think he has a great shot at going far as "American Idol" continues.

Scott Dangerfield is what I call sexy geek. He's all shaggy hair and glasses with a laid-back nature. He's got a sense of humor, too. When Steven Tyler noticed lipstick on Dangerfield's lips, Dangerfield said, "I was kissing one of the girls backstage!" Once he said that, Tyler and Dangerfield were kindred spirits.

But it wasn't just Tyler who was impressed. Jennifer Lopez fell in love with Dangerfield and declared him one of her favorites. She knows he's hot, and so do I. I loved his soulful Amos Lee performance. Let's see if this dude can make it far in "American Idol."

Naima Adedapo works at Milwaukee's Summerfest cleaning and that includes cleaning toilets. While she hears the Summerfest singers on stage, in the back of her mind she knows she should be on stage as well. Adedapo reminds me of an Erykah Badu with her style of singing and style of dress. I won't be surprised if she makes it to at least the top 20 in season 10 of "American Idol."

Scotty McCreery is a 16-year-old country singer. If you're a country music fan, you'll love the fact that Scotty has that honky-tonk style that reminds you of the true country singers, like George Jones. He may be only 16, but he's mature and confident, and he has a sense of humor. He wowed all the judges, and now he's going to Hollywood.

Finally, I was touched by the last performer, Chris Medina. We here in Illinois will be watching what this guy from Oak Forest, Illinois will do. He has nice vocals, but it's his back story that's incredibly touching. His beautiful fiancée was injured in a car accident and is now in a wheelchair after coming out of a coma. "What kind of guy would I be if I walked out when she needed me most?" said Chris.

His fiancée, Juliana, can see and does respond to movement. After Chris' audition, the judges asked to see Juliana. Steven Tyler was especially touched and caressed Juliana's hair and kissed her cheek. When the judges told Chris he made it, his family screamed and Juliana reacted. She seemed to know that Chris is going to Hollywood.
