Sanjaya Malakar, the Indian American contestant on American Idol currently representing one of the most under-represented American cultures, has promising a promising beginning. The Idol contestant auditioned immediately after his sister, who was obviously the more devote Idol wannabe of the two. Judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson quickly decided Sanjaya was the more talented of the two siblings but gave them both tickets to Hollywood.
During Hollywood week, Sanjaya made it through and had to leave his sister behind. Then everything fell apart. Each week the American Idol contestant graces the stage with his big smile and sweet disposition, but absolutely no skills. His song choices are mis-matched, his voice is pitchy, and his hair has become its own Idol contestant, drawing more comments from the judges than anything else.
After the first two weeks, it was obvious Sanjaya was several notches below the other contestants. Yet, he mysteriously keeps hanging on week after week after week. When he lands in the bottom three, he always bounces back. And his hair bounces back too.
Although the American Idol judges did note a marked improvement for the Indian American teenager this past week, the praise was for his improved stage personality. His vocals, the American Idol judges said, were still, as Simon Cowell would say, "Horrendous."
In fact, Simon Cowell's opinion of Sanjaya has changed so dramatically since he agreed to let him on the show, he now believes the boy is so untalented he threatens to quit American Idol if he wins.
Another unidentified American Idol fan agrees with Simon Cowell's opinion. The MySpace blogger is going on a hunger strike until Sanjaya is voted off. Currently in her fifth day of the hunger strike, the American Idol fan told www.hollywood.tv "I have no problems with Sanjaya personally. He seems like a very charming young man. However, he does not belong on American Idol."
"Sanjaya did come out of his shell a bit tonight, like the judges said," she continued. "However, his voice was horrific. He screamed through the entire song and jumped around like a maniac. Nice kid, nice kid. But not for American Idol."
Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson continue to be pleasant and courteous, but continuously tell Sanjaya he lacks the personal experience necessary to bring passion to his vocals.
Critics have discussed the validity of American Idol voting results, since several groups have made a mission of voting for the worst contestant to skew the results. Whether Sanjaya is the current target of these groups or just has a strong base of teeny-boppers with dialing software remains to be seen. Of course, Sanjaya would not be the first contestant to launch his fifteen minutes of fame by being the worst singer. William Hung made millions of people laugh as he raked in the money with his horrific vocals on his own album after Simon Cowell declared him the worst singer in the world.

Post a Commentoh my god. thats all i have to say. o.o
Wow, a hunger strike? I admit too that I think he should have never made it to the top 12. maybe even top 24, but I am not gonna lose food or sleep over it!
Uh I hate this! Sanjaya may not have been the very best on the show, but he had good enough vocals to stay longer on the show! I saw results in the news on TV and online saying that LaKisha was supposed to be leaving, not Sanjaya. The producers just wanted to releive the elders and mess up little kids heads. I took a vow of silence after Sanjaya left. Seriously. Also, I went to the American Idol concert, and the producers obviously messed with his voice on the show. He was awesome in the audition, and fanominal at the concert tour. DING! The producers strike again! And to end it off, what the heck was this girl thinking?!?!?! She is REALLY disturbed. If you are ruining your health and potentialy killing yourself just for a reality TV show contestant is just plain crazy.
Go check out this interview with Sanjaya being Sanjaya. http://www.playhouse3d.com/cc-common/podcast.html
Great article. Will be interesting to see how this turns out.
*Goes off to find a clip of Sanjaya to see for herself just how bad he sings*
Yeah - I was actually really rooting for Sanjaya and his sister during the auditions. And I felt he did deserve to go through Hollywood week, but after the first audition of the 15 finalists, it was obvious Sanjaya wasn't up to par with the rest of the contestants. And he seems to know this - he's just thrilled to have the opportunity to be on the stage at all. I know he's probably embarassessed by all this, but he seems like a really good guy and I hope this doesn't ruin a chance for a future career. I think he will be great in 5 years or so.
I also don't think that Sanjaya is remarkably vocally talented, but I feel bad about him receiving so much criticism, since he's so young. I feel that it's almost become like a "joke" to vote for Sanjaya, because everyone knows that he is the least talented out of the bunch.
I think those groups are doing a disservice to Sanjaya. He stated one week that he is not one of the best singers, so he must be embarrassed and appalled at being made a laughingstock by Howard Stern and his friends.
All she has to do is continually watch Sanjaya videos. It's enough to put anyone off their feed. I swear, I feel sorry for him because every time he stands in front of the judges, he gets reamed. It would be merciful at this point to let him go. AFA Chris Sligh, he'll do just fine. He already has a band and a fan base, and they've been selling pre-Idol records at their website. He's also a really smart businessman and internet-savvy. And anyone who looks like him, and has a wife who looks like HER, isn't a loser.
