American Idol Final 4 Perform Solos and Duets From the Movies

Mike, Crystal, Casey and Lee take on movie soundtracks this week on American Idol. They've got solos and duets to prove to America they deserve to be in the top 3.

The mentor this week, Jamie Foxx gives the Idol singers a challenge: they get a contestant shirt, or earn an artist shirt. He really helped the contestants learn to make themselves comfortable - by getting up in their face and starting at them while they perform for him. He wants them to come out of their shells, but (unfortunately) his advice doesn't seem to have had any effect on the contestants.

Lee sang "Kiss From a Rose," a song from Batman Forever's soundtrack (originally sang by Seal). He admittedly changed nothing about the song, so it was exactly like the original version. Lee's voice did add a little of the alternative edge to the song, but not enough to make it interesting. The song choice was probably not the right one for Lee to make.

For Big Mike, the song to sing was "Will You Be There" from the Free Willy soundtrack (originally sang by Michael Jackson). It was a very gospel version of the song, complete with the backup gospel choir. Every week, Mike does a similar themed song, so the gospel-y version wasn't a surprise. On one hand, it shows that Mike knows himself. On the other, it seems that Mike isn't able to do anything other than gospel or soul.

Crystal and Lee sang "Falling Slowly" from the soundtrack from Once (originally sang by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova) . They performed it simply facing each other playing their guitars. It was absolutely amazing.

Casey sang "Mrs. Robinson" from the soundtrack The Graduate (originally sang by Simon and Garfunkel). He played his ukelele, and it seemed a little corny. The song was boring, just like the original, which doesn't bode well for a live performance. He did change it up and made it a little more alternative.

Crystal's solo featured a Caddyshack soundtrack song: "I'm Alright" (originally sang by Kenny Loggins). She made it hers - infusing it with her Janis Joplin-esque style - and it was better for it. It was an unpredictable song choice that turned out to be (as usual) a great one by Crystal.

MIke and Casey performed "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?" (originally sang by Bryan Adams) from the soundtrack of Don Juan DeMarco. They harmonized wonderfully, making the song really come to life. Like Crystal and Lee, they had their guitars on stage as well, playing together.

Overall, the duets were amazing (especially Crystal and Lee's), and the solo performances lacked - mostly because of poor song choices.
