Carly Smithson recently sang her rendition of Jesus Christ Superstar from Andrew Lloyd Weber. It was a pity to see such a wonderful song screamed and yelled, instead of being sung, by Smithson. Sung in her usual style, Carly Smithson appeared to "yell" more of the lyrics than sing them. Instead of having a haunting, questioning melody, the song came across as angry. She's made this mistake more than once, and America finally got it right.
Perhaps somewhere earlier in the competition, Smithson's voice was thought of as one of the best. Her voice is good, there's no questioning that. However, her personality is flat and she never managed to connect with the audience.
Week after week after week, Americans were subjected to her yelling and screaming, making even the most simple song sound like an angry chant.
Will Smithson find fame (and fortune?) after American Idol? Or, perhaps, she'll fall into the group of former Idols who are paid to sing at mall openings and other special events in communities across America. At least the Idols who are doing this had personality, and were genuinely well liked even if their music wasn't.
This was Smithson's second chance. She landed a recording contract as a teen. It's been reported that millions of dollars were thrown at her without success. No wonder, she just doesn't have the "it factor," the charisma that makes her connect with, and be loved by, her audience.
Carly Smithson had landed in the bottom three of American Idol before. It's about time that she was sent packing.

Post a CommentAnybody who watches American Idol, has wasted their time. There are far more important and entertaining things in this country and world than American Idol. Are you kidding me? We have a term in Texas and in the military about people who drool over celebrities/celebrity shows, HOLLYWOOD. It doesn't have a positive cognitive meaning. It means that you guys value the gold and glitter more than people who actually make a difference in this country. For shame.

Um, no. It definitely should have been Carly and David Archuleta in the end. Obviously you don't know much about singing. She doesn't "yell". She puts real emotion into it. Her getting voted off that early was SO wrong. She was awesome.
Interesting take. I think she did better than Brooke White and Jason Castro, though. She could have stuck around a bit longer.
Great coverage. While I do like Carly's voice I never pictured her winning AI. My top pick is David Cook but I don't think he's "apple pie" enough to win. LOL
