Country Showdown with Kenny Rogers

Misti Sandefur
This week's legend was Kenny Rogers. He gave advice to the idols and helped them out. Some of the idols took his advice, and some did not.

The first performance was given by Taylor. Taylor sang "Country Roads," and he gave this week's show a much better opening than Lisa did last week. However, the judges disagreed with me. Randy told Taylor, "it was just okay." Paula said she expected more, and Simon said, "it was safe, boring and lazy." I remember "Country Roads" from years ago. When I was in JR high we sang this song in choir, and I still hear it on the radio from time-to-time (I listen to a station that plays older country songs), so I think Taylor sang the song well, but that's just my opinion.

Mandisa sang "Any Man of Mine, by Shania Twain. She put a whole new twist on the song, and it didn't sound too bad, but it wasn't Mandisa's best. Randy said, the last five seconds was great," and Simon said, "it was fun and cutesy."

Elliott chose "If Tomorrow Never Comes." Usually this song plays with my emotions, but tonight I didn't feel the emotion. I thought Elliott was off key in a couple areas. Randy, on the other hand, he thought Elliott's performance was hot. Simon thought it was a bit hesitant, and Paula still thinks Elliot is fantastic. Actually, I think Paula thinks everyone is fantastic.

Paris sang "How Do I Live Without You." This is another song that plays with my emotions, and this time, with Paris singing, it did play on my emotions a bit. Randy told Paris it was "just alright." Paula said she didn't feel like Paris connected with the song, and the audience booed Paula for her comments. Yeap that was a first, the audience booing someone other than Simon. Speaking of Simon, he said he had to disagree with Paula, because he thought Paris done a "great" job. Do you think since the audience just booed Paula that Simon was trying to score a few points here (*winks*)?

Ace did a great job with "I Wanna Cry." Randy told Ace, "it was boring for me." Paula disagreed with Randy and told Ace he done a nice take on the song. Maybe she was trying to win the audience back. Simon also thought Ace done a great job on the song.

When Seacrest asked Kellie if she was putting on an act, she told Seacrest no, and she said she was being herself, that it was not an act. I believe Kellie, and if you've ever been to North Carolina (where she's from) you would too. I have been to North Carolina more than once, and they actually do say their words differently there; they're true southerners. In North Carolina many people there sound just like Kellie. As far as people saying Kellie's a little dumb, well, I wouldn't blame that on North Carolina - it may just be the blonde hair. Now that's a joke folks, I didn't mean anything by it.

After Kellie admitted to being the "real deal," she sang "Fancy." Now that was an oldie, but one I remember very well. And I think Kellie stepped it up from last week's performance. She did a wonderful job on the song! Not only did she perform the song well, but it fit her perfectly. It had been a while since I've heard "Fancy," and Kellie brought it all back to me. What a come back from last week!

Chris performed Keith Urban's "Memories of Us," and I think he done a good job with the vocals. Randy said he enjoyed Chris's performance, and Simon thought it was great to see a different side of Chris.

Katharine said she loves country music, but it is not what she usually does. Even though country music isn't Katharine's choice, she still gave it a shot by singing "Bringing out the Elvis in Me." Katharine said she picked "Bringing out the Elvis in Me," because it wasn't too country. After her performance, Randy told her he liked it, and that she sang it very nice. Paula told her the song was her, and that it was her niche. Simon, on the other hand, he thought the song was peculiar.

Bucky ended this week's show, and Randy thought he started off a little out of tune on his song choice, but he said Bucky ended up getting it together. Paula thought both, Bucky and Kellie, "shined." And Simon, he thought Bucky was "okay."

Simon didn't seem to have a lot of positive comments this week. When asked, Simon admitted that he doesn't like country music, and I think because of this he really didn't compliment any of the Idols. That was wrong of Simon. A judge shouldn't make bad judgments just because he/she is not a fan of the type of music. Judges are supposed to judge the singers, not the style of music or song.

Tune into Fox tomorrow night to find out who will stay, and who will go.

What is it about American Idol everyone loves? It's not my cup of tea. Nice review though.
