American Idol: A Free-for-All Night!

Contestants Pick Their Own Songs

Kirby Rooks
Well they are slugging it out on American Idol as contestants picked their own songs and tried to sway America for the elusive vote. Last week 36 million votes came in the "Motown Get Down" week, as Michael Sarver bit the dust.

This week started out with Anoop "Dog" Desai belting out an Usher original in "Caught Up". Long story short American Idol judges didn't like it. Anoop in my opinion dressed the part, was up tempo and his vocals were 98% right on. What do these idiot judges want? They're just talking heads with no creative thought, except Simon. Someone even shouted this week at Kara that she sounded like a broken record and she does.

Megan Joy the blonde bombshell with a full sleeve tattoo on the right side twisted and churned to Bob Marley and it was maybe her best effort but it bombed. Megan, Megan who told you to sing reggae. Bob has a distinctive sound that is hard to top or replicate. It is not music that lends itself to creativity on your part. Megan as always you looked hot but this is not an "I look hot contest" you have to sing and entertain. Well let's see if looks help with American public tonight (I doubt it).

Danny Gokey did a passionate song in "What Hurts the Most" by Rascal Flatts and hit the jackpot as the judges raved and rightfully so, this was Danny's best effort and the song choice was spot on as Simon says. Danny is the most likeable contestant in the competition and was feeling it tonight as he left it all on the stage.

Allison Iraheta turned the show upside down as this precocious but talented 16 year old sang "No Speak" by No Doubt. Did a respectable job as she is definitely the rocker type and smells her career coming on. Judges tore her up with the costume but honestly I thought it added entertainment value and showed youthful contemporary style which the judges have complained that no one is paying attention to on the show. What gives Simon since you are the spokesman and my personal favorite?

Scott MacIntyre sang Billy Joel which I told my wife he should do and it came across very professional. Was well received and he got kudos for the new do and duds. Not strong but beats Megan hands down also his best effort to date which Simon gave him his due. All right Anoop quit singing, "Beat It" I didn't like it the first time.

Biggest disappointment of the night from one of the strongest contestants was Matt Geraud singing, "You Found Me" by The Fray. You are a soul singer so find a song with passion Matt. Don't go out on a limb on the show wait for the career. Darn it Anoop stop singing that song we know you will be back for another week.

Up next was a woman that plays to my heart every week and will have a bombshell of a career not to mention she is hot! Lil Rounds I know how frustrated you must be that the judges keep saying they are waiting for this or that just keep on keeping on girl you are wonderful. Great job and you looked terrific. That's right Anoop she has great talent.

Adam Lambert all I can say is crown you now because you have that star quality the talking heads keeps alluding to every week. Only you could sing, "Play that Funky Music" on American Idol and get the judges to think it was terrific and original. Sorry Anoop he is the best we have ever seen on this program.

Well maybe the best until Kris got on stage and for the second week in a row the feisty contestant came out with all the guns blazing as he whipped all the teenage girls into a frenzy, yes I said a frenzy. Kris and the soulful backup singers sang "There Ain't No Sunshine" while he played electric piano and he killed it. I think Adam's performance with a stinker song will be forgettable with the good-looking youthful Kris sneaking in the backdoor with a song that was o so original. Good job Kris.

Well, join American Idol at 8pm tonight so we can watch Megan sing Bob Marley one more time (groan).
