American Idol fans were in for quite a show last night, as the seven contestants graced the stage for another week. Matt Giraud had been saved from elimination last Wednesday and the spotlight of pressure was on him. Also, this week, the contestants were set to perform to the '70's era of disco music. Loyal Idol viewers know that "Disco Week" is among the least popular theme. Most of the times, the contestants perform badly. But the aspiring singers of Season 8, brought a new flavor to the music of disco.
Kris Allen has been praised amongst the female audience members and the judges of Idol. His vocals are not as smooth and sexy as the other male contestants, but he has something better. Kris may be the most original contestant of all the seasons of the show. He took Donna Summer's, "She Works Hard for the Money" and made it sound like something that could play on the radio today. The musical arrangement and the performance was fantastic. It was the best of the night.
Another contestant who put their own spin to a Donna Summer's hit is Allison Iraheta. Her musical arrangement to "Hot Stuff" was slower, but her vocals were still on point. She will definitely be the last woman standing since Lil Rounds bombed once again.
For weeks, Lil Rounds has been giving Idol watchers nothing, but mediocre performances. Last night was just another taste of it. Fantasia would have ripped Chaka Khan's, "I'm Every Woman". But Lil's voice wasn't up to par and the performance did sound like karaoke. She will definitely be leaving us tonight.
There was nothing karaoke about Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert's performances. These two will most likely be our final contestants standing and last night they reminded us exactly why. Danny chose Earth, Wind and Fire's, "September". And this week he had a strong performance from start to end. His voice is deep, raspy, soulful---something to be reckoned with. Meanwhile, Adam still remains the strongest vocal competitor this season. He lent his incredible voice to "If I Can't Have You" from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. The ballad was perfect for Adam and he sounded phenomenal. He definitely didn't disappoint the fans.
Matt Giraud and Anoop Desai had solid performances, but will still round out the bottom three votes of tonight's elimination show. One reason is popularity, and another is lack of originality. Matt performed to one of the ultimate disco favorites from the Bee Gees, "Staying Alive." He sounded great and looked as if he were enjoying himself. The main problem is that there wasn't anything original about his version. Anoop Dog's mistake is that he was boring. The new growth of facial hair and the color pink splashed into his wardrobe couldn't distract the viewers from that. His vocals to Donna Summer's, "Dim All the Lights" wasn't bad. And his fan base might vote heavily enough to keep him another week. Which will be sad for Matt because Anoop lacks the stage presence and the quality performances of the other male contestants.
Overall, Disco Week wasn't a total failure. Kris Allen was hot, while Lil Rounds was barely lukewarm. The judges used their save last week, so tonight two contestants will have to go home. Let's give our final farewells to Lil and Matt.
Until next time.
Happy Idol Watching!
