American Idol: What About the Judges?

Sherrill Fulghum
This season, several stories have appeared about the various judges on "American Idol". According to the various stories there could be a major judging shake up in the next season or two on Idol.

This season "American Idol" added a new judge bringing the total to four - two men and two women. New judge Kara DioGuardi brings another element to the panel - that of a hit making songwriter in her own right. DioGuardi has a contract with "American Idol" for only one season and DioGuardi says that she does not know whether or not her contract will be extended any further. The judging panel came under scrutiny this season when on more than one occasion the show ran overtime. Some critics of the show blamed the over run on the judges talking too much, especially with a fourth judge - "American Idol" has some 20 minutes in commercial ads during a one hour show, even more for longer shows.

It has also been revealed that judge Paula Abdul's contract ends this season. Over the history of "American Idol" Paula has come under numerous attacks for her behavior with accusations of addiction and drinking that Abdul has repeatedly denied. Paula says that the show would not be the same without her. Paula has also been criticized for her apparent non-coherent babbling.

Head judge and often booed Simon Cowell revealed earlier this season that his contract is scheduled to end after next season. Cowell is also a judge on the English show he created similar to "American Idol" called "The X Factor" and is a judge on "Britain's Got Talent". During the course of an "American Idol" season Cowell flies from the United States to England and back four time each week - a rather exhausting task. Cowell has hinted that if "American Idol" falls from the top spot on the viewer charts then he may no longer remain on the show. Cowell has also hinted that he is getting a bit bored with his current situation and wants to launch something new.

The only judge who has escaped major controversy this season is the dog man himself Randy Jackson.

Season eight of "American Idol" has seen a number of firsts and numerous record breaking vote counts, but can the show maintain its success of the current line up of judges should be altered or changed in some way? While this season has seen some incredible talent, season's past have not always had as good of a line up and listening to Cowell and friends is the better entertainment.

I don't know what to say about Randy. He calls females "dude", men dawg... if he calls a male a dog wouldn't the female be a bit#h? he is just confused.

I think the show wouldn't be the same without Paula. She is so different from the rest of the judges.

Very interesting article, since I'm a big American Idol fan like many others. Randy Jackson has always been my favorite judge, since he gives criticism and praise, all in a good way. Kara was great as a judge, I believe. She's knowledgeable about the music business and has intelligent critiques. I like Paula, but she is difficult to listen to at times, and Simon is correct in alot of his opinions, but too mean-spirited for my liking. Again, very interesting article about the four American Idol judges.
