Asia'h Epperson started things off well with Whitney Houston's hit "Dance With Somebody". Simon called it a "second rate" Whitney Houston, but I think he meant she stayed too close to the Whitney version. Nothing original, but she sounded good.
Kady Malloy followed with the Queen tune "Forever", looking scared to death. Kady M. has lost something that I hope she finds before it is too late, send her some confidence vibes. I really want to like her, but she has to start feeling it again before next week.
Amanda Overmeyer is the hardest rocker of the entire Top 16, but I still hear her as a great karaoke singer. Along the lines of Nikki McKibben, the third place winner of American Idol Season 1. Tonight was a good night for her, singing Joan Jett's "Hate My Self For Lovin' You", great song choice.
Carly Smithson or, as Ryan Seacrest referred to her, the Irish Wonder was great. She sang Celine Dion's "Drive All Night" and I was quite impressed, but Simon said he had seen her do better. That should be impressive when it happens again.
Kristy Lee Cook performed Journey's (and therefore Randy's) hit "Faithfully". It was just sort of okay. This is another American Idol contestant that I really wanted to like after Hollywood, I have all but given up.
Ramiele Malubay sang "Take A Look At Me Now" by Phil Collins. It may have been a mistake leaving Ramiele M. off of the Top Ten List, as this was the best performance I have seen from her. I still don't think that she can compete with the guys, though. We shall see.
Brooke White came on with a great accoustic version of Pat Benetar's "Love Is A Battlefield". This really surprised me, a very subdued version that was a little haunting. Brooke W. has secured herself a singing career, if nothing else.
Syesha Mercado brought out another Whitney Houston song with "Saving All My Love". Don't be afraid to change up Whitney completely, we know you can hit the same notes. Pick a different artist if you don't feel comfortable changing the song, but you have to make it your own. Syesha is a great singer, so I hope she stops singing like other people and adds her own twist.
It was a good night for the ladies overall, but I think it will come down to the guys early. I'm still pretty comfortable with my Top 10 List, so I'm sticking to it.
