American Idol, May 12 - Kris Allen's Heartless Performance Best of the Night

American Idol celebrated its 300th episode tonight as Danny Gokey, Kris Allan and Adam Lambert performed a judge's choice song and a personal song choice. Paula chose Terence Trent D'Arby's Dance Little Sister for Danny Gokey. Randy liked Danny's energy and called his performance "Dope." Kara thought his dancing was distracting and there was too much gyrating and wasn't sure if she would remember the performance. Paula said, "I'm a choreographer and I thought you did great. It was fantastic." Simon reminded everyone that it was a singing show and said, "The dancing was desperate, but the vocals were good. I wouldn't have added the saxophone solo. It's sounded like a kid's toy."

Randy and Kara chose Apologize by One Republic for Kris. Randy thought it was a nice performance and Kris showed who he could be. Kara thought it was a confident performance, but said he needs to swing it out of the park and take more chances with his interpretation. She also wished he would have come out from behind the piano and played his guitar. Paula said she was proud of him and thought he was worthy of the top two. Simon said, "Kara and Randy can't choose a song and you can't blame Kris for singing the song the way he did. It was a competent version of the original song." He also told Kara and Randy that they didn't hold up their responsibilities and they should have helped Kris with the arrangement.

Adam Lambert performed U2's One chosen by Simon. Randy said, "You are still in the zone. Unbelievable vocals. You are really talented." Kara called Adam a strategist and said he can take a song and make it unbelievable. Paula thought it was a brilliant performance and called him the next American Idol. Simon said, "Not to sound biased, but brilliant song choice. Brilliant performance and worthy of the finals."

Danny chose Joe Cocker's You Are So Beautiful for his personal song choice. Randy thought it was an amazing song. Kara thought it was stunning and amazing. Paula felt breathless and loved the gospel and R&B infusion. Simon said, "I wouldn't have done that arrangement. Your vocals were master class." Kris sang his version of Kanye West's Heartless accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. Randy commented he liked it better than The Frey's and Kanye West's version and said, "You are in it to win it." Kara thought it was bold, brave and fearless and thought his tone was perfect. Paula called him the bravest contestant ever and liked that he did something different. Simon said, "I thought your first song choice was lame and I had all but written you out of the competition. All that has changed after that performance." Adam performed Cryin' by Aerosmith. Randy said, "You are one of the best we've ever had. You should be a rock star." Kara is amazed at the high notes he can hit and said she'd see him in the finals. Paula said he set the bar high in the sky. Simon said, "It's easy to assume that you'll sail through, but everyone needs to vote because you deserve it."

Each contestant has three phone lines open for voting tonight. Tune in tomorrow night at 8:00 PM EST on FOX for the results show to see who's American Idol dream will end and who will be moving on to the final two.
