American Idol Needs to Bring Back Paula Abdul as a Judge

Bring Back Paula Abdul

Kurt Evans
I watch American Idol every week, to see the talent, as well as the reactions, of the judges; Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Kara Dioguardi, and recent new judge Ellen Degeneres(Ellen is taking Paula Abdul's former spot as a judge).

American Idol And Paula Abdul

In my opinion, American Idol has lost something since Paula Abdul left the show. Maybe it was the constant sparring between Paula and Simon(that was entertaining to watch), or it might have been something else. I think part of it had to do with the level of experience in the music industry that Paula Abdul brought to the show.

American Idol Judges And Their Background

In my opinion, it doesn't make much sense to bring in a comedian as a judge of American Idol, a talent show that is based on singing. All of the other judges Simon Cowell(music executive), Randy Jackson(bassist, singer, record producer, music manager), and Kara Dioguardi(singer-song writer, record producer, music publisher) seem to have some type of music background. Sure, Ellen Degeneres(stand up comedian, television host, actress) has an ability to gauge talent, because she's someone who works in the entertainment industry, but I think someone with more of a music background would make more sense as a judge on American Idol(a talent show based on singing ability) and would therefore bring more knowledge and insight to the show, thus making it a more interesting show to watch.

American Idol Is A Talent Show

I've heard that the network executives were saying that American Idol is a talent show based on the talent and not on the judges. While I agree, that yes American Idol is a talent show, one of the reasons for watching, is to see the judges reaction to the talent. Part of the big allure to American Idol is the fact that a nobody from nowhere can wind up a star in tinsel-town(a.k.a. Hollywood), due to their singing ability.

Be A Judge Of American Idol

If just anybody could be a judge of American Idol, it wouldn't make the show that interesting to watch. I think that in order to be a judge on American Idol, you should have to have a music background to qualify and not just an entertainment background.

I agree with Davida 100%. I couldn't have said it any better. Great write up though, Kurt.

I have to agree with you. Ellen's obviously there to provide comic relief. Hell, I could have done that.

I don't watch American Idol, but you are right. Putting someone without experience in music industry to judge musical talents is like taking a writer on an art exhibit to judge arts. You need experiences and training - not just some talking ability gained from talk shows.

I don't watch AI, but this is a good report. I do think, too, that the judges should at least have some knowledge of music. Great article.

    Good opinion piece.

Actually, Paula got worse and worse over the years. I wonder if she didn't have some kind of drug problem, or something else. Her problem was she never gave constructive criticism to any contestant, and when someone needed it, she was just sad and sniveling instead of hard. Ellen may not come from the music industry, but she knows how to connect with an audience and how to entertain - which is no less important to a singer than being in key and remembering the words and melody. She's not quite as critical as she could be, but when she is, she does it with humor. I think she brings a good angle to the show and she is coherent, which Paula wasn't anymore.

AI has decline in recent years, and with the departure of Paula Abdul, has pretty much become a train wreck of a show. I don't think even Paula Abdul can save it now...
