After watching American Idol last night, I believe the first one to be saved will be David Archuleta. Young David made two smart song selections last night. Faced with the task of performing hits from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, David Archuleta chose to sing "Stand By Me." He opted to be accompanied by only the drums and triangle in this arrangement.
This was a brilliant decision for him because it showcased his powerful yet sweet vocals. David also gave a strong second performance to Elvis Presley's "Love Me Tender." Although he's the youngest American Idol contestant, David Archuleta has played his cards wisely on American Idol. He's a ballad singer and stays close to what he does best and what his fans love best about him. While not always the most exciting to watch, David Archuleta can always be counted on to deliver a solid performance.
The second American Idol I believe will be remain on the show is David Cook. In my opinion, David Cook is the strongest contender for the American Idol title. Not only does he have the killer vocals and the star quality, he's also an excellent performer. David has the ability to his captivate viewers and control the stage. Last night, David Cook chose to perform "Hungry Like the Wolves" by Duran Duran. While this was not my favorite performance by David, it was still enjoyable. His second song of the night was "Baba O'Reilly" from the Who. David Cook brought his unique rocker edge to this song and, I believe, solidified his stay for another week on American Idol.
The third American Idol contestant I predict to survive this round of elimination is Syesha Mercado. Although Syesha has found herself in the bottom three on several occasions, I believe this young woman deserves to stay. In the past few week, she's been stepping up her game and showing the American Idol viewers and judges a whole new side. Last night, Syesha Mercado chose Tina Turner's "Proud Mary" and lit up the stage with her enthusiastic and high-powered performance. Syesha showed a different side when she sang "A Change Is Gonna Come" by the legendary Sam Cooke. While not as powerful as her first performance, this proved to be a very emotional and heartfelt selection for Syesha. With these two performances, I feel Syesha Mercado connected with her American Idol viewers and will be spared another week.
Which brings me to the American Idol I believe will go home tonight. While his boyish good looks and dreadlocks have brought him many fans, I don't believe Jason Castro will remain on American Idol after tonight's elimination. His laid back attitude may serve a purpose in his life, such as preventing him from suffering a stroke, but it won't win him the title of American Idol. I get the impression that Jason prepares for his performances at the last second. While the other performers try to bring new and exciting changes each week, Jason Castro seems to be content to just exist on the American Idol stage. Last night, Jason chose to perform "I Shot the Sheriff" by Bob Marley.
I knew this was going to be ugly before he even began...and it was. What has always been one of my favorite Marley songs was butchered on the American Idol stage by Jason Castro. After a less than stellar performance, Jason tried to redeem himself with Bob Dillon's "Mr. Tambourine Man." Before making it half way through the song, Castro flubbed the words. I know this has been the American Idol season for "lyric amnesia" but this is the final four! The remainder of his performance was completely unforgettable, so the only thing for fans to remember about Jason Castro's second performance is that he didn't remember the lyrics.
So there you have it. I predict that Jason Castro will leave American Idol tonight. Honestly, judging from his lax attitude on the show all season, I doubt viewers will see much of a reaction from him either way.
