American Idol Recap: Rat Pack Era Songs

Top Five American Idol Contestants - April 28, 2009

Sandra Essary
Tonight's theme on American Idol was the Rat Pack Era. To date, this was the most exciting, intense yet enjoyable American Idol yet. Jamie Foxx, who starred in "Ray" about the life of Ray Charles, coached the final 5 contestants. The final American Idol contestants performed in the following order: Kris Allen, Allison Iraheta, Matt Giraud, Danny Gokey, and Adam Lambert.

1. Kris Allen - "The Way You Look Tonight" - American Idol April 28, 2009

Good-looking Kris Allen sang a Rat Pack era version of The Way You Look Tonight that charmed and displayed his vocal talents although the song did not support a great vocal range. Good, nonetheless. Who can resist those eyes? Randy said that this was Kris' best moment.

2. Allison Iraheta - "Someone to Watch Over Me" - American Idol April 28, 2009

Jamie Foxx thought Allison Iraheta was too young (just turned 17) to have ever been deeply in love, so he told her to think of the love she gets from her family, sing the song, and give that love back to the audience. And she did just that. Allison proved that even though she styles herself as a rocker, she can still sing ballads from a bygone era. And sing them well.

3. Matt Giraud - "My Funny Valentine"- American Idol April 28, 2009

From the beginning, the uncertainty in Matt's voice was palpable. Perhaps it was the key and octave he was singing in, or just stage jitters in general. He gave it his best shot, but Jamie Foxx's advice to Matt Giraud may not have served him that well tonight.

4. Danny Gokey - "Come Rain or Come Shine"- American Idol April 28, 2009

Up until now Danny, has been good and consistent but just has not been that exciting. Tonight, however he surprised a lot of people. He gave his song a Rat Pack flavor and as Randy said, he could put out an album of this sort right now.

5. Adam Lambert - "Feeling Good"- American Idol April 28, 2009

Adam Lambert sang Nina Simone's tune, "Feeling Good" and once again, delivered. Of the five, he had the most dramatic entrance, swaggering down the stairs Ryan Seacrest descends at the beginning of the show. (Randy told Seacrest he could no longer use the stairs after tonight.) While this may not have been Adam Lambert's best song on American Idol, he still hit every note flawlessly and wowed the audience with his theatrical interpretations.

All in all, Matt may be going home. Of the night, the American Idol contestants that sparkled were Adam and Allison, although Danny Gokey did well with his rendition of "Come Rain or Come Shine".

    Nice recap

I kinda' had a feeling Adam wasn't going to fare well with the voters. It's a lesser knwon song than the others, and FYI originally from the Broadway musical "The Roar of the Greasepaint" with Anthony Newley.

Oh, how I wish I'd seen this one. It seems like it would have been worth the time. Eagerly waiting for the repeat of this particular show.

Once in a great while I watch the show but not often. That Kris Allen lives in Conway the County Seat of the county that I live in here in Arkansas, but I haven't even been keeping up with him other than what I hear on the news before and after the show each week. Still you posted a great article about all of them--probably better than watching the show would be anyway. Johnny Yuma
