Jasmine Murray and Jorge Nunez Were Eliminated in the First American Idol Season 8 Elimination Show

The first American Idol results show was held on March 11, 2009. In this episode, a new American Idol rule was announced and the first two contestants were eliminated from the show.

At the beginning of the night, Ryan Seacrest introduced the new American Idol rule that took the audience by storm. From here on to the end of the competition, the judges have one unanimous decision to keep one contestant around for an additional week. They can only use this special "save" once over the course of the competition, so it keeps the majority of the voting process in America's hands.

The Idols also completed their first music video to the tune of "We Will Rock You." It wasn't exactly a musical piece, but it was a great first music video for many of the contestants.

As the results started, two Idols stood and sat. Jasmine Murray, the third to stand, was asked to move to the middle of the stage. Megan Joy Corkrey was also asked to move to the middle of the stage. Ryan Seacrest announced that one of the two would be going home, and Megan was safe.

Jasmine was asked to sing while the judges debated over whether to use their save on her. Seeing that this is the first week and there are many other talented contestants, it was probably never seriously considered that she would be retained. After a tearful hug with Ryan Seacrest, Jasmine watched as American Idol showed their first look-back video.

Jasmine Murray Eliminated - Analysis

Jasmine Murray, though extremely poised for a singer of her age, was a classic underachieving contestant on the show. Murray was really liked by many around the country, and felt that Megan Joy Corkrey could have easily been leaving as well. That being said, Murray is a raw singing talent with a bright future.

Murray got in through the wild card round, but a disappointing first round performance had her on the bubble to leave the show early.

Second Elimination

Anoop Desai was sent to the middle of the stage, along with Jorge Nunez. This was no real surprise, seeing that these were among the worst performances of Tuesday night. One thing that was noticeable about Anoop was that he whispered, "I know," to someone in the spotlight of the stage. Guess it is a good thing to have "Lie to Me" in the hour block right before American Idol.

Jorge Nunez Eliminated -Analysis

All jokes aside, Ryan Seacrest announced that Jorge was eliminated and was at the mercy of the judges. Jorge was a passionate contestant, but did not have consistent vocals or the apparent depth in American song knowledge to last long in this competition. He had great stage presence, and it looked like he had a great time during his time on the show.

In the middle of the show, Kanye West sang a live version of his hit single, "Heartless." Right before the second elimination, Kelly Clarkson came on and sang "My Life Would Suck Without You."

All in all, it was a great first results night for the show. If the show can continue to bring in great musical acts and mix in results like they always have, this show will gain more and more steam as contestants are eliminated one by one.

Just read that Kanye West's performance was all a performance, including the vocals. It seems that the whining Elvis wannabe lip-synched his performance. Go figure...
