American Idol Results for Week 5

On results night for Week 5 on "American Idol" the baby photo/birth year theme was continued with a film clip of the number one song for the year Simon Cowell was born. The number one song for 1959 was "Venus" by Frankie Avalon. The film clip was replaced by the current Frankie Avalon performing the song.

Along with Avalon, hip-hop/urban artist Flo Rida and season five "American Idol" alum and award winning country music artist Kelly Pickler provided the musical entertainment. The group sing-a-long came from the year "American Idol" was born with "I Can't Get You Out of My Head". While host Ryan Seacrest still needs a serious lesson in the proper techniques for guiding a person with a visual disability, the Idol song crew didn't stick Scott MacIntyre behind a piano but let him dance around the stage with the other singers during the sing-a-long.

Last night the show ran long so the judges did not get the chance to have their say on Adam Lambert's performance... until tonight when Randy Jackson that Adam is consistently great and Kara said that the standing ovation was the perfect thing. When asked how he felt about Simon Cowell giving him a standing ovation Adam said that he was extremely honored.

The judges overall response to the performances last night were that Randy felt the night was off and a bit flat while Kara said that some of the front runners seemed to be having an identity crisis.

When the bottom three were revealed there were two guys and one girl sitting on the stool as Anoop Desai and Scott MacIntyre once again found themselves in the bottom. They were joined by first timer Lil Rounds who was saved a short time later. Ryan announced that only 30,000 votes separated the talented piano player from his fellow Idol contestant. While votes were down a little this week from the previous two weeks; there were still 34 million votes cast by fans in the few hours allowed for voting.

Contestants sometimes hear the judges chiding them for not heeding their advice. Last night piano man Scott MacIntyre heeded the advice of Paula Abdul and did not play his piano. Her advice not only landed Scott in the bottom three; it got him the fewest amount of votes. When Scott performed again for the judges he did so without the guitar. In order for a contestant to be saved all four judges must agree and in the end the vote was two and two. Simon said that in deciding whom to save the judges must also consider the other singers and who is the best.

Scott MacIntyre's Idol journey ends in Week 5, but his musical future has only begun. The talented pianist could easily find himself among pop music's best of Piano Men - Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Burt Bacharach, and Barry Manilow. Paula called Scott one classy gentleman and in his exit profile Simon said that in a sea of forgettable people Scott is one that he would remember.

I always look forward to watching AI because if gives me joy, excites, entertains and just let me enjoy the night with something to talk about after. But tonight, I found myself crying for Scott. Not because he was leaving the show but for being a success in being in AI. I'm very happy for him for experiencing what AI can offer. It's an irony that Scott's elimination became an inspiring moment on TV. It's a memorable moment.
