American Idol Review: Adam Lambert Meets Elvis Presley

Well Maybe Just the Ghost of Elvis

Lori Borys
American Idol was all about Elvis tonight and to bring home the total package that was Elvis they have chosen the total package that is Adam Lambert to mentor the contestants. Perfect choice, in my opinion he's the best showman with the best voice the show has ever brought to light.

Crystal Bowersox kicked it off with her Janice Joplinesque voice and blues/county/folk feel that can get up and rock. As she belts out I Used To Drink I am hoping the songs she chooses for her first album are as good as the ones she's doing on the show. I have not heard a single bad performance from this woman. Unfortunately Andrew Garcia was bitten by Hound Dog. He seemed hung up on it being an Elvis song that he needed to make his own when he should have gone back to the Big Mamma Thornton version which would have better suited him.

Tim Urban chose one of the most romantic songs of all time, Can't Help Falling In Love and he did a good turn taking it to the Jason Castro does Hallelujah level but I wasn't thrilled with the transitions from low key to top of his lungs they seemed disconnected. Lee Dewyze should have done the rocker version of A Little Less Conversation his voice was good but it didn't move me or him for that matter. Aaron was on the verge of letting loose on his Blue Suede Shoes but he held it in. Katie Stevens' version of You Got Me Running didn't have me running for the phone but it wasn't the worst thing I heard all night.

Siobhan Magnus' voice was clear as a bell for the first part of the song then started to go rough and just when I thought she was going to pull it out she fell back into the clear ringing tones. Casey James did a big blues version of Lawdy Miss Clawdy and it totally suited his style and his voice. It might have seemed like he was getting by on his good looks but he actually does have distinct voice and style. Big Mike put us all InThe Ghetto with an amazing and unexpectedly toned down version of the song where you feel the power of every syllable. Last week the judges saved him from elimination and this week Adam voiced what I've thought all along, this man should be in the final two.

Maybe next year when they decide to do Elvis week they can call me and I can pick the songs for the contestants.

I was a bit disappointed in this segment of the show, have enjoyed other weeks more than this one. But I'm always eager to hear Crystal sing :)

I didn't think Adam did such a good job.

LOL, Lori, I'd like to go to and help pick the songs. I would force one of the contestants to sing a medley of Little Sister / Don't Be Cruel and I want Burning Love, Devil in Disguise and Stuck on You. You can have the rest. Deal? ;)
