American Idol Review: Carly Smithson

Carly Smithson performed a so-so rendition of Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" last night.

I believe she could have done much better than the rigid performance of this 80's classic. The Irish songstress has a beautiful voice and this could have been an amazing song choice for her. She has the ability to belt it out and really knock everyone off their feet. I am not sure if she was nervous, but whatever she was feeling slightly affected the way she portrayed the song.

She is generally a consistent performer, and I don't think her fate should be based on this performance. She has great control over her voice, something some of the other Idols are lacking. I thought the best part of the song was the end, where she put her own little spin on it. I may be alone in this opinion, but watching her hit that last note gave me goosebumps. In my opinion she will be one of the two finalists. She not only has the stellar voice, but absolutely stunning looks which as we all know, makes for a good pop star.

The judges were not impressed by her performance, and again I have to ask myself "What are they listening to?"

Although I agree, she could have done much better, she still delivered a great performance, better than most of the other Idols. She is going to have to definitely bring out her "A" game and really let loose.

She needs to choose songs that will showcase her vocal range and really wow the judges. I think if she sang a song by Celine Dion she would do an amazing job. The Idols this year are all better than previous years, so no one is safe and the competition is just heating up.
