"American Idol" Season 10: JLo Breaks Down Over Chris Medina Elimination

First Five Contestants Named to the Top 24

It was a bit of a weird night on "American Idol" season 10 tonight. A look back at some auditions that were great. A crazy Vegas wedding, and Jennifer Lopez has a complete meltdown during a final cut. Weird is really all that can describe it.

We were not allowed to view the final performances of the top 40 as they sang for their lives one last time in Hollywood. At least we did get to see a few new faces in Vegas during the second group round before the top 40 were named.

There are all kinds of standouts this season. This is the first time I've been truly impressed with all of the contestants at this stage. Well, there was Carson Higgins. Nice kid, but seriously how did he get to Hollywood the first time? Thankfully he will not be in the top 24 of AI season 10.

The groups tonight were either duos or trios and trained by a vocal coach that would make an army drill sergeant cry. The show even referred to her as Peggy, "the vocal coach from hell", and if you thought Simon Cowell was tough... wow. It was sad that none of the so-called singers knew any songs by The Beatles. Where is our history?

James Durbin continued to scream his way though, and will likely be named to the top 24 next week (no spoilers here). I think he has to start doing something else though.

Lauren Turner and Tim Halperin are both great every time I hear them, and then I forget all about them. I'm not sure if that's just lack of air time or lack of charisma. I think both will likely advance though.

Paul McDonald and Kendra Chantrelle were great together on their duet. We haven't heard anything from McDonald yet and he is a great surprise. I love the gravel mixed with almost a Kenny Loggins sound. His original he performed for his final audition was really good too.

Lauren Alaina had her first small meltdown during trio rehearsal with Scotty McCreery and Denise Jackson. Though they flopped big time in front of the executives, the three pulled it together on stage for the judges and did alright. Scotty McCreery even managed to remember his words. I have such high hopes for this guy, and he scares me that he'll disappoint.

Vegas week ended with the marriage, and soon after elimination, of Ashley "please put the cameras on me" Sullivan. Glad we didn't miss this for more singing. With "Dave" the cameraman as their captive, er, witness, Ashley and her new groom got awkwardly familiar with each other right there at the altar. Let the honeymoon begin!

Back in Hollywood it was time for the "Green Mile" walk... that excruciatingly long walk down the lit tiles to the judges holding your "Idol" life in their hands. Things were moving along painfully slow. The first person in the AI season 10 top 24 was Naima Adeppo. Next came Clint Jun Gamboa. Then Haley Reinhart and Paul McDonald were brought in to the next round. Ashton Jones joined the group headed to the voting public and all seemed to be going as planned.

Enter Chris Medina... saddest back story of any "American Idol" contestant in history. That includes you Danny Gokey. Nicest guy in the world too. A real man in every sense of the word. Chris Medina is a good singer. He's not great though. I applaud the "Idol" producers for not putting him through based on his back story. I hope Chris Medina does well and gets his own contract if that's what he wants. I was more disappointed in the elimination of Deandre Brackensick.

All the drama of the Chris Medina elimination proved to be too much for Jennifer Lopez though. She was overcome with emotion after giving Medina the bad news. Medina took it like a real man, not a tear was shed (not even a quivering lip), which nearly made it worse for the judge. Lopez was a complete mess, wondering if she'd given him the news in the right way.

Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler did their best to console JLo, but she openly cried... apparently so hard we have to wait until tomorrow night for the rest of the "American Idol" season 10 top 24 to be named. You can actually see the entire list of the AI season 10 top 24 here if you can't wait.
