"American Idol" Season 10 Premiere Review

Surprisingly Not Awful..

Jenna de Salea
Before we begin this recap, I know I'm just a silly entertainment blogger, but I'd like to dedicate all of today's posts to a very special little boy, Julien Collot, who is losing his battle with cancer. He's the namesake of Julien's Project Ladybug Fund, and simply a brave and exceptional kid. Much love and prayers for Julien and his mother Jackie. May this little ladybug fly with the angels.

It's very difficult to be funny, but sometimes laughter is the best medicine...

So last night we finally got to see what all the fuss was about for the opening of this 10th season of American Idol. I have to say it wasn't that bad, actually. I manage to be entertained, and really didn't notice that Simon was missing. Momsthoughts is going to give you an awesome recap on the whole show, but here's what I thought of the premiere...

The Judges

You know, I was surprised. I was totally expecting Jennifer Lopez to be over the top and unnecessarily mean just to be 'edgy and street' but it turns out she's exactly Paula Abdul without the quaaludes. Anybody that pouted got put through to Hollywood. Randy was Randy, dawg... and Steven Tyler was a pretty good anchor. Kind of creeped me out a bit how much of a dirty old man he was being with every leggy blond that walked in, but I felt he was pretty solid.

The Contestants

I don't like this portion of the show, and hardly ever watch until the Top 20. Why bother? If you've ever auditioned or tried out for anything, you know that those with the guts of steel will get through and outshine those with maybe a bit of nerves, but the playing field evens out down the road, because those that nail auditions 90% of the time lack depth, I'm looking at YOU Siobhan. Those that have average auditions usually are able to dig a little deeper and last longer. Last night didn't really have anybody stellar. That 16 year old kid that had the wheelchair story was really the only stand out, in my opinion. Of course there were the requisite trainwrecks, but it almost didn't matter because J.Lo was putting them all through anyway.

The verdict? Sort of boring, but I think it's first of all, hard to judge this early in the game, and the real test will be when things get pretty real in the Top 20.
