American Idol Season 10 Sob Stories Are Just Getting Way Out of Hand Already

Chris Medina's Sad Story is Hot Right Now, but Idol is Not a Sob Fest

American Idol season 10 sob stories are just getting way out of hand. Yes, Chris Medina's sad love story had me intrigued and made my cry, but isn't this a singing competition and NOT a sob story fest? Do the Idol singers really have to rely on their story to get them more votes and sympathy?

Lately these reality shows such as American Idol, and Dancing With The Stars are turning more into sympathy shows rather than talent shows, but why?

I can answer that one. Because one it's television, two it's considered reality. Therefore, the producers need the drama, and sob stories to gain the viewers attention. I would love to see one episode where a contestant comes out and sings, makes it to Hollywood without any sob story or sympathy, and then later on a feel sorry for me story approaches. This way we as fans got to know the person's real talent, and judged them by their vocals and NOT how many times they have cried or told us something that made us chocked up with tears. Don't get me wrong, there has been many other Idol sob stories in the past that made me cry, but I'm not going to feel sorry for the person and vote unless they can really sing.

Chris Medina- Yes, he can sing, but his story reminds me so much of Danny Gokey's although Medina's Fiancee is still alive when Gokey's isn't. People are already making Medina the fan favorite to win American Idol, but I honestly feel Medina is going to pull a Gokey and bring up his girlfriend every moment he can. A sob story and to exploit his girlfriend, what a shame. This is just my own personal opinion. Other people might feel differently, it's just the way I see it.

You have to remember producers of any reality show are going to use and manipulate the sad stories and use them like it's their revenge to get higher ratings.

What About Angela Martin Sob Story?

After getting that golden ticket to Hollywood back in season 7 Angela's dream got crushed. Her father was killed which led Martin to leave the competition. It was sad enough to hear about her daughter who suffers from Rett Syndrome let alone her father being murdered.

This didn't stop the strong and talent singer. In season 8 Angela went back. Got another golden ticket, but another incident happened. A traffic ticket, which held her dream back again. As some say sometimes 3 times is not as charming. Angela did not make the top 24 on season 9 her mother ended up disappearing. Now this girl I felt real sorry for, because she really did have talent.

Danny Gokey Sob Story More Like Pity Story?

Gokey's wife Sophia had a heart problem and just 4 weeks before Danny's first audition she passed away. It was a total surprise to many, because the survival rate was so high for Sophia. But Danny took this too far. Yes he had to grieve, but to mention his wife one too many times made fans feel like he was using her death for more popularity. Gokey didn't have to keep mentioning his wife. His singing talent was pure, fresh, and amazing from the first time he opened up his mouth, no reason to exploit his wife the way he did.

But regardless of all the Idol sob stories the tears, and drama will continue to keep Idol's ratings high.

I stopped watching after the contestants were announced. I didn't find J-lo's relentless sobbing the least bit believable. When they announced Chris Medina's record deal, it seemed to me this was most likely a piece of information that she already had as she displayed her devastation of having to let him go. Another reason I didn't care to watch was I just didn't agree with the choices for contestants. I couldn't tell one long straight haired brunette from the other. The rest, besides the one deep voice country singer, were raspy voiced or gospel sounding belters. It seemed like it would be just one big pop fest. I would have liked to have seen the other country singer go on. I'm sure the show could have had two country singers. Not that I'm a country music fan, I like some, but not a big fan. I just thought both were interesting in their own way. And surely the kid from Louisiana would have been interesting to watch.

I was getting tired of the sob stories too, and JayLo seemed to be caught up in the emotions and sending people through because she felt bad for. Simon wouldn't have done that!

Agreed. I don't watch this very often but the sob stories are a bit much.

Bear in mind that American Idol is hurting. Ratings are down. I wonder how far they would go to boost their ratings...

Just wanted to make a comment about Danny Gokey & Chris Medina. I don't know a lot about past idol contestants who use these so called "sob stories" and their motives but I do know that when I went to the idol tour in Tacoma, WA a few years back Danny Gokey was very sincere about how lucky he felt to have had the opportunity to be found by idol and that even though bad things happen to good people- a person should always follow their dreams. He told the entire stadium (every single individual in attendance) that they too should follow their dreams and goals in life and to never let anyone stand in their way. I think Danny and Chris give information on their background to inspire one thing....hope! Thank you for your words of encourage Danny- I will never forget them. To Chris- Thank you for sharing your story; I could tell that your fiance was proud to be there with you. Even if you don't win idol or even make it to the top 20 - you have inspired people- always go for
