American Idol Season 10: Will Steven Tyler Assure the Ratings?

Or Will Jennifer Lopez Be Everyone's Idol?

Donna Thacker
Season 10 of "American Idol" premiered to a much awaited audience. Was it because people were so anxious to see the talent from contestants, or was it because the new judges were two legendary idols? It seemed that most of the excitement was that Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez had joined the judge's panel on "American Idol."

Steven Tyler Dazzles the Contestants on "American Idol"

Steven Tyler is a legend in the music industry. If the contestants are nervous in normal circumstances, imagine standing before someone of Tyler's talent and performing up too the standards of "American Idol." Most of the hopefuls seemed utterly in awe to be in the same area as Steven Tyler.

Was that "American Idol's" intention? Ryan Seacrest stated in the opening ceremony that Season 10 of "American Idol" had seen the biggest tryouts of all time. As the hopefuls in New Jersey paraded in front of the judges, it appeared that their main goal was to see Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez.

Steven Tyler didn't let the contestants down either. Even the ones that received the dreaded "no" didn't appear to be nearly as devastated. They may not have gotten a golden ticket, but they got up close to a super star. Perhaps that was many of the contestant's one and only goal.

Many of the female contestants got an encouraging smile from Tyler. His slightly flirtatious ways was enough to unnerve even the best performer. The contestants that did get the "no" also got a heartfelt explanation from Tyler and Lopez.

Did it seriously bother them to tell these young hopefuls that they were not getting that golden ticket? I believe that it did. Tyler explained in the beginning of the show that he was looking for the "next Janis Joplin of this era." He did not find her hidden in the talent of the season opener of American Idol.

Is Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez "American Idols" Way of Assuring Ratings?

How many people tuned in to American Idol just to see Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez? How many contestants showed up just to get close to them? Fox 2 Now News asked for comments on their face book page wanting to know what people thought of the show.

The comments were varied, but many stated that they didn't even watch, or that "American Idol" had run its course. Some claimed they missed Simon and Paula and some were surprised that anyone still watched the show.

Did American Idol sign the super star judges as a way to ensure their ratings? Time will tell, as I personally did not witness any total star quality on the show last night. If anything, there were a few teenaged contestants that stood out from the rest. Perhaps younger contestants and long time legends like Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez can keep the ratings up for this 10th Season of "American Idol."

I neglected to comment much on Randy Jackson, because it appeared to me that the contestants also neglected Jackson. He even appeared to be a bit put out that so many of the contestants were in awe of Tyler and Lopez.

Many of those who received the golden ticket thanked Tyler and Lopez without mentioning Randy Jackson. At one point, he even commented that he had not been thanked when the other two were.

Will there be a little jealousy unfolding, or is it just another ploy for ratings? Tune in to "American Idol" on the Fox channel on Wednesday nights at 8pm ET time and decide for yourself. I'll be watching too, at least for awhile.

Not for me anyway. He can sing. I'll give him that, but he's a bit chauvinstic.
