American Idol Season 8 Off to a Sidesplitting Start

Glad Contestants Didn't Get the Memo

Dawn Reavis
You have to wonder where people get the nerve to audition for American Idol. You have to wonder a bit more about the kind of friends and family they have. Obviously the memo, "Friends don't let friends who can't hold a note embarrass themselves on national television," is not circulating. Lucky for us, watching folks who sing like sick cows generates the kind of laughter that makes tears roll down cheeks. What's even more entertaining is watching the hopeful wannabees go before the firing squad of Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and newbie judge Kara DioGuardi.

So far the biggest change to the format is the fourth judge. DioGuardi is an award winning songwriter and producer. She went along suspiciously well with fellow judges but it is just a front. Indications are once DioGuardi settles in she'll be bringing a lot of heat to the judges' table.

You just have to love a show like American Idol. Where else can you see Simon's reaction when a contestant screws up the lyrics to a song he wrote? Priceless.

Only on American Idol can you see a grown woman throw a screaming tantrum that would rival one of a hysterical two-year old.

When Michael Castro, the younger brother of last seasons' 4th runner up, Jason Castro, made it through to Hollywood he proved almost anyone can be the next American Idol.

The younger Castro admitted he only showed interest in singing three weeks before the audition.

"I figured if my brother could... I could too."

Thanks to the younger Castro, millions more believe reddish pink hair and a few weeks of practice equals a recording contract.

To all American Idol contestants, please ignore the aforementioned memo and know your courage is much appreciated. A good hearty laugh is just what the doctor ordered to get our minds off the ailing economy.

American Idol will heat up the judges table with the addition of Kara DioGuardi. The award winning producer has been awarded 10 BMI Pop Awards for having written the most performed songs on radio.

I came back to add that you're right. You def don't have to be able to sing to be on AI.

I never bother watching the show, but I always wonder what's going on with it. You do have to have balls to go up in front of Simon let alone any of the other judges. Thanks for the recap!
