American Idol Season 9 Contestants Perform Lennon and McCartney Classics

Barb Hickey
The top nine contestants of Season 9 performed songs from Lennon and McCartney's songbook. With hundreds of songs and 35 number one hits to choose from, the contestants made some good and some not so good song choices tonight.

Katie Stevens performed a heartfelt version of Let it Be that Randy called her best performance ever. Ellen said it was amazing. Kara said it was great vocal, and Simon said she got it right tonight. Tim Urban, who has been subject to a lot of criticism from the judges over the past few weeks, made a great song choice in selecting All My Lovin' and accompanied himself on electric guitar. The judges thought it was a great performance and that the song suited his voice. Crystal Bowersox stepped away from the piano and picked up her guitar again and gave another outstanding performance singing Come Together accompanied by a musician playing a didgeridoo and it worked. Casey James performed Jealous Guy with acoustic guitar and the judges liked his vulnerability and sensitive side. Simon called it the best performance of the night.

Now, the not so good song choices of the night. Sixteen-year-old Aaron Kelly performed The Long and Winding Road. The judges thought his voice sounded great but not young and relevant. Andrew Garcia choose Can't Buy Me Love. His performance was also called old fashioned and a little corny. Michael Lynche performed a version of the classic Eleanor Rigby that sounded nothing like the original. Randy didn't think the arrangement worked, and Simon thought it was too over the top. Siobhan Magnus performed one of the lesser known hits, Across the Universe. The judges liked her unpredictability but thought the performance sleepy and didn't sound like a current song.

The most interesting performance of the night goes to Lee DeWyze who performed the Beatle's classic Hey Jude. In the middle of his song, a bagpipe player walked down the stairs at center stage playing his pipes and then walked across the stage. Ellen said he did a great job and was impressed that he wasn't distracted by the guy that got lost from his parade. Overall, the judges thought he did a great job but didn't care for the bagpipe player.

So, who is going home? Definitely not Aaron Kelly, Tim Urban or Casey James. The young girls love these guys. Definitely not Crystal Bowesox. She continues to deliver outstanding performances week after week. Lee DeWyze will be here for another week despite the bagpipe player. Hopefully, not Katie Stevens who delivered her best performance of the competition after being in the bottom three two weeks in a row. Perhaps Andrew Garcia, who still hasn't quite lived up to his early performance of Paula Abdul's Straight Up, or Michael Lynche for his arrangement of Eleanor Rigby or Siobhan Magnus with her unique style. Tune in Wednesday night at 9 p.m. EST on FOX for the results show.
