American Idol Season 9: A New Idol is Ushered in Amidst Great Entertainment

'It was a Beautiful Day' for Lee DeWyze

Karen LoBello
Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox have been my two favorites all season on American Idol. I thought it wouldn't matter which one ended up standing under the victory confetti on May 26th. As much as I like Lee, however, I have to admit I was a little disappointed when it wasn't Crystal. Less than 2% of the vote separated the winner from the runner-up.

Lee was visibly overwhelmed when the announcement came that he was season nine's American Idol. I love Lee's voice and look forward to hearing more from him. Lee sang his final song, "It Was a Beautiful Day" through tears of joy. It was a touching ending for him.

Crystal went out with style and grace. No need to feel too sorry for her...she's headed for a great career. I believe she'll be one of the Idol alums we actually hear a lot about. Crystal was loving life on that stage tonight. It's no wonder...the entertainment was a treat.

The top twelve vocalists from season nine started out the show-with Orianthi on guitar-singing "School's Out" with Alice Cooper. I was really struck tonight by how much Siobhan Magnus seemed to stand out from the other ousted contestants. It made me wonder why she was sent home as soon as she was. This finale had some of the best entertainment I've seen on an American Idol finale.

Kris Allen, the Bee Gees, Michael MacDonald, Hall and Oates, Chicago, and Janet Jackson all contributed to the night.

The two-hour finale was peppered with high points.

Carrie Underwood sang a song she co-wrote with Kara DioGuardi, "Undo It." Carrie was a good example of the fame an American Idol can realize.

Christina Aguielera belted out "You Couldn't Keep Your Hands to Yourself" like only she can do.

Brett Michaels surprised the crowd when he showed up to sing a duet with Casey James. Brett's had many health issues, but apparently they're not keeping him down.

Crystal Bowersox was in her glory singing "You Ought to Know " with Alanis Morrisette. They both sounded great.

The night culminated with Crystal and Lee joining the legendary Joe Cocker in "With a Little Help from My Friends". Talk about a distinctive voice. He still sounds good. It was my favorite spot on the show.

Since it was Simon Cowell's final appearance on Idol, there were several tributes to him interspersed throughout the program. Paula Abdul came back to tease and honor him. She never had her own official goodbye, so I think she was enjoying the attention too. Many of the past Idols were present and came on stage to sing in tribute to Simon. Simon was then called up to speak. He noted that he didn't think he'd be so emotional. He said it was the best ten years of his life.

It certainly has been the best nine months of Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze's lives....and the best is yet to come.

I guess we will see how their careers do. Sometimes it doesn't matters who wins.
