American Idol Season 9: Take a Look at the Best Moments

Karen LoBello
Some people are glued to their television sets every Tuesday and Wednesday to watch American Idol. Others are 'closet watchers'-they kind of enjoy it, but won't admit it. Some people even say, "Who's Simon Cowell?" The show has been praised for bringing new talent to light...and raked over the coals because viewers thought it was 'fixed'. If you have been watching American Idol's Season 9, you no doubt have formed opinions and witnessed your favorite moments. These are some of mine.

Crystal, "Long As I Can See the Light"

Even though "Me and Bobby McGee" was my favorite 'Crystal song' of the season, this was one of those, 'In your face, Simon' moments. Judge Simon Cowell had previously told Crystal that she was a run-of-the-mill singer who might not even garner attention at a subway stop. After being hospitalized for her diabetes the night before, Crystal came back strong on American Idol as one of the top ten girls, singing Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Long As I Can See the Light". She wanted to prove to Simon that she could, in fact, stop people at a subway...or maybe even a crowded theater. He ate his words (which is always a delight), saying, "I completely underestimated you last week." The judges all agreed that she was a serious artist. Crystal sings "Long As I Can See the Light" here.

Pants on the Ground

I'm not one to watch much of the American Idol auditions. I find them generally to be derogatory most of the time. I had a pleasant surprise when 'General' Larry Platt, 62 years old, had the nerve to step out and let his little tune, "Pants on the Ground" rip. He was endearing. At the time, Simon Cowell said, "I have a horrible feeling that could be a hit." Larry certainly went on to be a sensation. See Larry's audition here.

Harry Connick, Jr. As Mentor

I knew that I always liked the sound of Harry Connick, Jr.'s voice. I love his style. However, until he mentored American Idol on May 5th, I didn't realize the depth of his sense of humor. He was a true asset and the best mentor this season. He put the Idols at ease with his quick wit, and boosted their confidence levels. My favorite line was when he asked the judges what was up with the word "pitchy". I totally agree...can't they just say "out of tune"? Enjoy Harry's antics here.

Andrew Garcia, "Straight Up"

Andrew's rendition of "Straight Up" was one of my favorite moments of the season. Unfortunately, it was his demise. He never was able to capture the creative energy that he exhibited in that performance. It was a moment in time, however, and it will be remembered. Andrew performs "Straight Up" here.

Crystal and Lee's Duet

Crystal and Lee should record a duet. It would be a huge seller. They were awesome as they played their acoustic guitars and sang "Falling Slowly" on May 11th. That performance was reassurance that they'd be the last two standing. Crystal and Lee sing "Falling Slowly" here.

Casey James and His Niece

Casey got the boot from American Idol on May 20, 2010. However, he went out with class. One of the most touching moments of that night was watching him pick his adorable niece out of the audience, bring her on stage, and sit her on his lap as he sang John Mayer's "Daughters". Casey sings "Daughters" here.

Mike, "This Woman's Work"

"Big Mike" Lynche was a favorite among fans and contestants. Using his physical fitness training, he picked up host Ryan Seacrest more than once. "Woman's Work" was in contrast to his physical persona and it was emotional and moving. Since Mike's wife was in the audience, and she'd had a baby while Mike was an American Idol contestant, the lyrics were especially touching, even bringing judge, Kara DioGuardi, to tears. Watch Mike sing "Woman's' Work" here.

Siobhan Paints It Black

Siobhan Magnus added flair to American Idol that is seldom seen. She stole the show on March 16th's top twelve performance show singing the Rolling Stones' Paint It Black. Siobhan showed off the vocals that were gone all too quickly from the American Idol stage. Siobhan sings "Paint It Black" here.

Aaron Kelly Tells His Mom She's Got a Way

Aaron Kelly told the viewers early on that he was adopted by his aunt and uncle. He sang Shania Twain's "You've Got a Way" on April 27th. I could tell by the way he felt the words-'You gave me faith to find my dreams'-that he was singing this song in appreciation to his aunt, his mom. It was a touching moment. Aaron Kelly sings "She's Got a Way" here.

Grand Finale Results Show

Lee DeWyze won the title of 2010's American Idol on May 26, 2010. Crystal Bowersox ended up to be the runner-up. One of the highlights of season nine was the finale. The entertainment surpassed what is typical for an American Idol resuts' show. Highlights of the evening came with Carrie Underwood, Joe Cocker, Christina Aguielera and Alanis Morissett. Hopefully, the bar has been raised and we'll see more like this one in the future
