'American Idol' Season 9: Top 10 Boys Perform, but Some Could Have Used the Extra Day of Practice

A Last Minute Change Put the 'Idol' Boys on Stage One Night Early

It was all about the boys on American Idol Season 9 Tuesday night, when the Top 10 guys sang their versions of Billboard Hits.

While the Top 10 girls were originally slated to perform on Tuesday night, a last minute change landed the boys on stage, due to an announcement by host Ryan Seacrest that Top 10 girl Crystal Bowersox was in the hospital. According to Us Magazine , Bowersox was taken to the hospital due to diabetes complications. Unfortunately, based on last night's performances, some of the boys could have used another day of practice.

And now it's on to the Top 10 Boy's Performances.

"Big Mike" Lynche started the night off with an amazing performance of the Marvin Gaye song, It's A Man's World . Lynche has a powerful voice and he completely owned the song, delivering a performance worthy of a standing ovation from judge Randy Jackson. The night was getting off to a good start.

Next up, John Park sang the song Gravity, by John Mayer. Completely unmemorable and judge Simon Cowell told him as much.

Casey James attempted Gavin DeGraw's I Don't Want to Be, which included a rockin' electric guitar solo. Unfortunately, the judges thought he should have concentrated more on his singing than his guitar prowess. Even Kara DioGuardi, who has been gushing over James all season, was hard on him. She was almost overly critical, and no where near the blushing school girl she was last week when James sang the love song Heaven to her. Simon Cowell noticed Kara's change of heart too. When she told James he "took two steps back this week", Cowell quipped, "Did he not return your call, Kara?"

Then there was Alex Lambert, who judge Ellen DeGeneres previously likened to an unripe banana. He performed the song Everybody Knows and the judges agreed it was a vast improvement over his performance last week, although he still comes off as a bit shy and nervous.

Todrick Hall took a huge risk with the Tina Turner song, What's Love Got To Do With It. For the most part, the judges weren't impressed.

Jermaine Sellers dragged out the Marvin Gaye Song, What's Going On. When the judges panned his performance, he invited Simon to come see him sing at church, Simon said he would go. Huh??

Andrew Garcia may never live up to his memorable performance of Paula Abdul's Straight Up from Hollywood week. The judges continually compare his performances to that one and he may never be able to pull something off like that again. Not really fair, as his rendition of the James Morrison song, You Give Me Something, was decent enough on a night when there was a string of boring Boy performances.

Aaron Kelly took his turn at My Girl and while the judges like his voice, the arrangement was a bit dated. This kid needs to remember that he's only 16.

Tim Urban performed the song, Come On Get Higher, and Ellen was a bit harsh on him, but Simon praised the fact that he took the judges advice from last week and actually put it into play.

Finally, Lee Dewyze gave another good performance, with the song Lips of An Angel. Without the security of his guitar, Dewyze looked uncomfortable, but he still delivered.

Wednesday, the Top 10 girls will take their turn and Thursday night is the live elimination.

American Idol airs tonight at 8:00 PM ET/PT on FOX.

It was awful nice of AI to cater to Crystal Bowersox. I bet the guys weren't so happy, though.
