American Idol Season 9's Remaining Eight Guys Hit the Stage

'Big Mike' Ends the Night on a High Note

American Idol male contestants were vying to earn one of the coveted top 12 spots in Season 9. The Wednesday, March 10th program was lackluster...that is until Michael Lynche, the final vocalist, took the stage.

When Michael Lynche started "This Woman's Work" in falsetto, the American Idol audience knew something special might be coming. Mike has a strong voice and he combined it with raw sentiment. He actually brought Kara to tears.

Lee Dewyze is still one of my favorites of the American Idol guys. His rendition of "Fireflies" wasn't his best performance to date, but it was solid. His confidence is showing up now on stage. I enjoy listening to his husky tone, no matter what song he sings.

Tim Urban was the biggest surprise of the night for me. I had written him off American Idol a while back. I liked his interpretation of "Hallelujah" very much. He made me sit up and take note as he sang with honest emotion.

Aaron Kelly has one of the most powerful voices of the American Idol guys. He sang Lonestar's "I'm Already There" with great conviction. However, he does look uncomfortable on stage.

Todrick Hall was told by American Idol judge, Simon, that he'd be good on Broadway. I'm not sure his voice is strong enough, but I would agree that he is a performer. His version of Queen's "Somebody to Love" was pitchy, but I think it was his best so far.

Casey James left the electric guitar for his acoustic this week on American Idol. His performance of Keith Urban's "You'll Think of Me" could be classified as 'pleasant'. He appears comfortable with the country genre.

Alex Lambert has a very different tone. It's distinct from the other guys on American Idol. His performance of Ray LaMontagne's "Trouble" was well suited to his vocal styling. As with most of the evening's performances though, nothing about it really stood out.

Andrew Garcia is still subjected to the judges' criticism that he peaked early on with "Straight Up," and that line is getting old fast. He sang Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle." I thought the judges were too harsh on Andrew. It was a decent performance.

There have been American Idol shows where I winced through many of the vocals. Wednesday's program wasn't that bad...it just wasn't that good either. The top twelve contestants will be announced tomorrow night.
