I have to admit that I have watched just about every American Idol performance and some of them stay with you for a long time afterwards. I have been a fan of Tim Urban's since he took the stage on American Idol Season 9. Last night, Urban graced the band stage of our local concert series in New Windsor, New York and I had the opportunity to interview him for our local newspaper.
When I first was introduced to him, I uttered a star struck, "Hey Tim, I voted for you!" and he countered with, "Oh yeah, well I want to see the phone records to back that up!"
You can listen to Tim Urban perform Hallelujah (American Idol Season 9) on You tube here. The friendly banter was an ice breaker that easily that set the tone for a very enjoyable interview with him.
Urban hails from Duncanville, Texas, although these days he is living in Los Angeles approximately 1400 miles from his home and while he pursues his singing and acting career. His Bio lists his musical influences as Third Day, Jim Croce, John Denver, James Taylor, Michael Buble, Coldplay and Matt Nathanson.
Urban's easy demeanor and down-to-earth conversation made for a very enjoyable few private moments that we spent together. It was abundantly clear that stardom hasn't elevated his ability to see clearly that he is living the blessed life. He told us, "I know my purpose and who I really am and it wasn't dependent on the opinions of a few judges."
When I asked him if he would recommend American Idol as a platform for other aspiring musicians, he was abundantly clear, "You have to understand your own purpose and work hard towards your goals. It doesn't come over night but over time and through hard work."
He shared that being on American Idol was a wonderful and blessed time for him and he was thankful for the opportunity. Urban did state that overcoming the initial "pretty boy" tag in the beginning was frustrating but clearly it didn't impend his ability to stand on his musical talents and proved that you can look good and sound great, too.
Tim Urban obviously is someone who will be around for a long time to come and his career is just beginning. As he weaves his way through small towns all across America, he is leaving a trail of faithful followers in his wake.
Tim, if you are reading this, you'll remain in our prayers that you will always stay as grounded in your purpose as you share your time and talents with us.
