American Idol: Thoughts After the Eliminations

What the Idols Need to Do and What Mistakes They've Made

With Jasmine Murray and Jorge Nunez out of the running the first week and Alexis Grace gone in the second round, what's to come for the remaining 10 contestants? The American Idol judges have not used their save ability that was announced during the top 13 results show, so anything can happen. What does that mean for this week? Lets take a moment to look at it and see.

The theme for the Top 10 Idol contestants was announced to be "Motown Week", which means that they will be taking tips from the legendary Smokey Robinson and music exec Berry Gordy Jr on what they can do with the songs they choose. With such a broad spectrum of music to choose from, will the contestants pick well for themselves? Song choice is everything at this point in the competition, especially since there are still so many contestants left in the American Idol competition.

If you look at the three who have left, you'll see the main reason for their early departure being song choice. Anyone who has watched American Idol in the past knows that at least one person will sing Jolene during country week, and it is often the song that does them in. Unfortunately for Alexis Grace, it got her eliminated from the competition. Jorge Nunez chose to sing Never Gonna Say Goodbye for Michael Jackson week, but the Jackson 5 song didn't do him any favors, as I don't think it was all that memorable. Jasmine Murray chose I'll Be There, another Jackson 5 song that turned out to be her downfall despite the judges loving her.

The biggest problem that the American Idol contestants face is memorability. They need to do something that will be remembered and thus far, the only one who has brought that to the Idol stage is Adam Lambert. Especially with his strange performance of the Johnny Cash hit, Ring of Fire. The contestants need to pick big songs, memorable songs and deliver memorable performances if they want to make it further in the competition. They've all got amazing amounts of talent and any one of them can win, They also need to listen to their mentors every week, as well, in order to make the most of their time on the Idol stage.
