Anoop Desai who hails from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, credits his auditioning for American Idol to his friend Eve Carson. Carson was murdered in March of last year. Her body was found in the middle of an intersection in Chapel Hill. She'd been shot several times in the face with a shotgun. Eventually two young men were charged with her murder. To date, only one of those young men have been taken into custody. Carson served as student body president at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was a class mate of Desai's.

Anoop Dog Back in the House

During the Top 13 performance Anoop made a misstep with his version of Michael Jackson's "Beat It". Simon went so far as to say the Anoop didn't deserve to be in the competition. Paula deemed it a karaoke caricature. This week Anoop covered Willie Nelson's "You Were Always On My Mind". "You Were Always On My Mind" is a country classic and Willie Nelson's signature piece. Randy Travis wondered if Anoop could make it unique enough while doing it justice. He needn't have worried. With dulcet full tones, Anoop came roaring back into contention and demonstrated why the judges made him a wild card pick. His timing and tone were impeccable. In addition Desai seemed to make a connection with the emotional depth of the lyrics. He also imbued the song with a soulful strength that took it over the top. The song fit Anoop to a T. His performance garnered not only high praise from Simon but also a retraction of Cowell's earlier statement about Desai's place in the competition. Desai delivered a simply performed stunner. In the words of Randy, "The arrangement was dope."

I'm so glad to see him back in contention. He really does have the chops. He just needed the right song to showcase his vocals.
