Kristie Lee Cook, 24, is an Oregon native who won the judges over by singing "Amazing Grace" in her audition. In fact she had to sing the same song over again in order to win the judges over during American Idol Hollywood Week. I found it a bit funny that Kristie Lee sang "Rescue Me" as it seemed she was indeed in need of rescuing. Paula tried to rescue Kristie by giving her the excuse of being sick and being the first out on the stage for American Idol: Ladies' Night. Simon of course was honest and let Kristie Lee Cook know that her performance was subpar. Will the "sick" excuse be enough to rescue Kristie Lee from being kicked off of Idol? We'll have to see.
Joanne Borgella, 25, is an American Idol hopeful who has had a career as a plus sized model. Joanne took the stage on American Idol singing "I Say a Little Prayer", originally sung by Dionne Warwick, which happens to be one of my favorite songs to sing along to. Joanne Borgella looked comfortable on the stage as she sang her heart out. Idol judge Randy Jackson again spoke about "nerves" when giving Joanne her critique. Paula as always was the calm before the storm. Meanwhile Simon brought up the "Cabaret" when giving this Idol hopeful her constructive criticism.
Alaina Whitaker, 16, is the youngest of the American Idol contestants. Alaina started her journey on Idol with an audition that didn't impress Simon. However Alaina went on to Hollywood week and gave Simon a reason to believe. I found it almost a bit too predictable that Alaina would go up on the stage and sing a slow song, which was until she started belting out the lyrics during the chorus. Alaina managed to win over all three American Idol judges and was told by Simon, the toughest judge to win over, that she would sail over to the next round. I had to disagree and found that her performance was nothing extraordinary compared to Idol performances of the past.
Up next we see Amanda Overmyer, 23, known as the rock n roll nurse. Amanda has a unique vocal which makes her more original than other contestants on American Idol. Unfortunately I feel that the vocals are a bit limited by her uniqueness. The Idol judges collectively loved Amanda's, or the "rocker nurse's", performance though Simon didn't seem to understand the song choice. Just like she survived an accident with a Semi truck I believe she will survive for another round of American Idol. Well, that is until viewers grow tired of her "uniqueness", not that it would be surprising as it has happened in the past to other American Idol contestants.
Amy Davis, 25, appears as an Idol contestant that will not make it far on Idol. This prediction is not only based on vocals, but also her appearance. In a weird way she reminds me of a past American Idol contestant who was judged for her "revealing" outfits, Haley, however she does seem to cover up. Not to say that she isn't beautiful as she is clearly a very beautiful young lady who comes off as sweet as well. Unfortunately nice girls finish last...
Brooke White, 24, is a nanny from Arizona who is known for being a "good girl" as she stated before her performance on American Idol. Brooke is an easily likeable young lady who is sure to grow a following of American Idol contestants. Brooke chose to sing "Happy Together", sung by the Turtles, just as Jason Castro did the night before. I did not feel that this was the best song choice for Brooke though Paula and Simon disagreed with me. I feel that Brooke White's American Idol performance was strong enough to allow her a chance to continue on to the next round of Idol competition.
At this point we have reached the halfway point of the night. It appears that the female contestants on American Idol have fared just as well as the guys. There hasn't been any performances which came across as impressive to the judges and most likely the American Idol audience. Will the other half of the female Idol contestants make this competition one worth watching or will the American Idol audience shorten their attention span towards the contestants?
Alexandrea Lushington, 17, gave an impressive audition making her deserving of a spot on the American Idol top 24. Right off the bat Alexandrea caught my attention and continued to have it throughout her performance. Her performance was a welcoming addition to the bland performances before her on American Idol Wednesday night. Alexandrea is clearly one of the best out of the top 24. If she keeps up this type of performance she will make it into the finals. Simon disagreed and felt that her performance was comparable to an "awful 60's musical". It's okay though Simon, everyone cannot be right all of the time.
Kady Malloy,18, had a great American Idol audition as Simon told her she was the best out of all the auditioners for Season 7. Kady has talents elsewhere as well as she performed a Britney Spears impression in front of the other contestants. She did so well that I had to take a double take to make sure that it wasn't really Britney Spears herself singing. Only if Kady could have brought her talent to the stage as well she may have fared better with the judges. Song choice was poor, unfortunate to Kady, and did not showcase her vocals causing an easily forgettable performance. If only some of the American Idol contestants would pay attention to past mistakes on Idol they might actually have a chance win.
American Idol contestant Asia'h Epperson, 19, auditioned for Idol two days after her Dad passed away which caused an emotional performance. Asia'h appears to be an American Idol contestant that will be favored by the judges and audience alike. Asia'h however will not need sympathy to get votes as her voice and likeability are enough. Asia'h has a distinguishable voice which helps her to stand out from the other American Idol contestants and I felt she did a great job singing Janis on Wednesday night. Not only did she impress this American Idol voter but she won the Idol judges over as well. Simon even went so far to say that she was the best of the night thus far. While some people may give Asia'h Epperson some flak for going on American Idol so soon after her Dad's death they should realize that people grieve differently.
Ramiele Malubay, 20, may appear as an innocent "little" girl but, she has a big voice to bring to the stage on American Idol. Ramiele, like Paula stated, seems to so far be a "force to be reckoned with". Simon paid this Idol contestant an amazing compliment stating that she was the best. Ramiele I feel is safe for certain and we will see more of her on American Idol Season 7.
Syesha Mercado, 21, is an actress hoping to turn a musician by appearing on American Idol. Syesha struggled during Hollywood week due to sickness. Still she managed to pull it out in the end winning her a spot on the top 24. Syesha is one of the American Idol contestants to watch as she can not only sing but, she brings an attitude to the stage that makes her entertaining to watch. Simon appeared to be on a roll as he paid yet another compliment telling Syesha that she is probably one of the more talented American Idol contestants on season 7.
Our last contestant of the night has brought controversy to American Idol Season 7. I won't blame Carly as the controversy was created by the media. Carly Smithson, 24, is not the only American Idol contestant who has had past musical experience or record contracts. I have no problems with her past experience though I expect that she should do well on American Idol. Carly Smithson's performance on American Idol Wednesday night did appear as being performed by someone with experience, though I found it to be a bit on the safe side. Randy complimented Carly as having the best performance on American Idol this week. Paula gave her usual babbling speech that makes me lose attention. Simon mentions the hype and buzz which surrounds Carly Smithson and basically said that her performance did not meet the expectations. Carly should find herself safe on Thursday night when the results of the votes will be revealed.
Who will make it and who will be sent home? The only for certain right now is that two guys and two girls will be sent home and the rest will have another chance to impress. For some American Idol contestants it will be an easy task while others will most likely struggle. My predictions for who will be sent home are hard to come up with as I feel most of the American Idol contestants did not perform up to standard.
