American Idol Top 7: Undisputed Queen Crystal Bowersox Breaks Down; Siobhan, Lee, & Tim Inspire

Season 9: Alicia Keys Mentor; Casey and Aaron in Trouble; Michael Okay

Rik Merchant
American Idol; Tuesday, April 20, 2010. The judges are Randy Jackson, Ellen DeGeneres, Kara DioGuardi, and Simon Cowell. The host is Ryan Seacrest. This week's mentor is Alicia Keys. The music genre is Inspirational Songs. Here are the performances in order of occurrence-

Alicia hoped American Idol's blond hunk Casey James would give 'Don't Stop' by Fleetwood Mac 'a lot of personality' as he played the electric guitar and sang- the song was Bill Clinton's campaign song when he first ran for president. But Randy told Casey, "We keep seeing the same thing from you." Ellen said, "Great guitar playing." She also told Casey he's consistently good but no one will be talking about the performance tomorrow. Kara said he's just like anyone else. Simon said there was 'zero emotion' and 'no originality'.

Alicia wanted American Idol's reliable Lee DeWyze to be that boxer when he played the acoustic guitar and sang 'The Boxer', a classic Simon & Garfunkel composition. Randy said, "You are a great artist, ready to make great music." Ellen said, "We're seeing better and better from you." Kara said he'd had his moment tonight. He was connected to the song and it took him to another level. Simon said, "Even though we're only two in, this was the best performance of the night. The difference between yours and Casey's is staggering."

Alicia said that 'Better Days' by the Goo Goo Dolls could be Tim Urban's song. But Randy told American Idol's only Jedi knight that his performance, with a guitar, was karaoke. Ellen said his performances are like 'the soup of the day'. Sometimes she likes the soup, sometimes she doesn't. She didn't like his performance tonight. Kara said it was not his best. Simon said, "It was a bit of a letdown."

Alicia thought it would be great if American Idol's teen Aaron Kelly cried at the end of his singing R. Kelly's amazing 'I Believe I Can Fly'. He didn't. Randy said 'it's a giant song' and that Aaron has great vocal talent, as well as a big voice. Ellen told him, "You handled it real good." Kara said that toward the end, he was flying. Simon said that if he's been listening to that on the radio, he would have turned it off in ten seconds. Me, too.

Alicia was very impressed with American Idol's unpredictable beauty and artiste Siobhan Magnus and her voice. She said Siobhan's doing things that other people probably can't do. Siobhan soared with 'When You Believe', a duet sung by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Three of the four judges were all wet tonight. Randy started the sodden mess by saying that what was 'arguably the toughest song of the night' was performed 'just okay'. Kara said it was like a musical. Simon said it was the wrong song and he picked on Siobhan's butterfly arm bracelet- he thought the butterflies were leaves and were a distraction.

Thank goodness for Ellen who loved the performance and said it confirmed why Siobhan is here. Actually, the slaughterhouse cold-blooded criticism for Siobhan from Kara and Simon in particular seemed as pre-meditated as it has been for the last few weeks.

American Idol's big man Michael Lynche played the guitar and sang 'Hero'. Randy said that Michael held his own. Ellen said it was a great job. Kara said it wasn't her favorite performance of his. Simon said it sounded artificial. The performance didn't gel for him "but I still think you're going to be around next week", Simon said.

Alicia said Crystal is very special. Wearing a long black gown, American Idol's amazing Crystal Bowersox sang, without playing an instrument, Curtis Mayfield's 'People Get Ready'. Her incomparable performance, which began with her singing acapella, climaxed when she emotionally broke down on the last phrase. Randy gave Crystal a personal standing ovation. Ellen loved it. Kara loved it. Simon said Crystal's performance was inspirational and she sang the song 'fantastically'. He also said it was in a 'completely different class' from the other performances. As great as I think Crystal is, I believe she could do far better. She's no Janis Joplin, no Bonnie Raitt, and no Adam Lambert. Yet, she is the undisputed queen of American Idol this year.

Ryan joined Crystal, who had tears on her cheeks, on center stage and asked why she was so emotional tonight. She said it was because this was the first time that her dad was in the American Idol audience and she felt so grateful for her family. As Ryan was giving out her voting number, Crystal asked for the handkerchief in the breast pocket of his jacket. He quipped, "It's glued." Crystal questioned, "Glued" and then she took the handkerchief as she grinned and said, "Oh, Hollywood."

The votes are almost in for the night. Wednesday, tomorrow, night will yield the elimination results. Out of five guys and two girls, the two singers in the most trouble after tonight's performances are- Casey James and Aaron Kelly.

For those who are participating, the Idol Gives Back online auction ends tonight.
