On Tuesday, the judges, especially Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell, stressed just how important it is for the contestants to make it into the top 10. Those contestants are the ones that go on the "American Idol" tour, which can help make or break their careers.
Those taking part in the tour, and continuing on through the competition for at least another week, are Lee Dewyze, Casey James, Crystal Bowersox, Katie Stevens, Michael Lynche, Aaron Kelly, Didi Benami, Siobhan Magnus, Andrew Garcia and Tim Urban.
That means Paige Miles was the one sent home after receiving very bad marks from the judges for her performance of "Against All Odds." The brutality continued Wednesday night when Cowell informed Miles before she even started singing that no matter how well she sang, the judges' save would not be used.
She was joined in the bottom three by Urban and Stevens. Not having Andrew Garcia, who was told he sucked the soul out of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" Tuesday, while Stevens was greeted by the judges with mostly positive remarks, was a bit of a surprise. Even Garcia seemed to expect to be in the bottom three.
The judging panel as a whole was tough on almost all of the contestants Tuesday, with the exception of Bowersox, Stevens and Kelly. This grumpiness may be due to the fact the talent at this level, the top 10 or 11, does not seem to be up to what it has been in the past few years. No matter how much they claim at the beginning of the season, this is not the most talented group ever. To be sure, the contestants can sing. But it was painfully apparent Tuesday night many of them are not yet stage performers nor do they know the best songs for themselves.
The "American Idol" results show seemed more like a Disney Channel show for the most part, with Tuesday's guest mentor, Miley Cyrus, performing, as well as Joe Jonas and Demi Levato singing a duet. Cyrus was fine, starting out at the piano then walking a little closer to the fans.
Next week the theme will be rhythm and blues night, with the special guest mentor being Usher. That theme would seem to favor Michael Lynche, who has been singing everything in that style anyway, but one never knows.
