'American Idol' Viewers Can Now Vote Online on Facebook

'Idol' Changes that Could Help or Hurt the Experience

"Idol" fans from around the country are grabbing their phone or computer as they send in their vote for the Top "American Idol" finalist from among the Top 13. Season 10 has had lots of changes in store for die hard viewers. The latest changes gives Facebook users the opportunity to vote for their "Idol" favorites while logged into their account. This is another move to exhibit the need and want for social media to take a center role in competitions such as "American Idol." One has to wonder if competitor reality shows such as "Dancing with the Stars" will be next to introduce voting on Facebook.

According to ABC News, we learn that "American Idol" has introduced the online voting system. Viewers continue to flock to this newer/quicker way to vote. America, as we knew it as children, has been transformed into a social media tidal wave. Social media sites now connect people with family, friends, and reality shows like "American Idol." Why not take advantage of our FB addiction and vote for "American Idol" while we are there? Makes sense to me.

"American Idol" viewers might not like FB asking for personal information just to be able to vote. Because viewers have to give personal information in order to vote, maybe social media sites like FB aren't the next tidal wave for reality TV.

One could argue that it is often difficult to vote for "Idol;" whether you vote online or on the phone, or maybe you are one in a million who gets through the first time, every time. Either way, "Idol" has given viewers more ways to vote, ensuring the importance of every vote. Facebook is just another tool to make sure every vote counts.

With anything new, viewers can expect that the "kinks" will need to be ironed out before "Idol" viewers enjoy an error-free voting experience. Although accounts can now be used by "Idol" viewers, fans and viewers will need to be signed into Facebook before they can cast their votes -- as well as give Facebook access to much of their information. At the end of the day, my recommendation is to stick with what you know: Cast your vote via phone or text your vote.

It doesn't matter which way you decide to vote as long as your vote gets counted. Find the way that works best for you, and enjoy the "American Idol" experience. The beauty of this competition is that everyone gets a chance to cast a vote toward their favorite singer!
