American Idol: Why Kris Allen Should Lose

J. Paul Norton
American Idol has once again brought us to the point where two people wait with baited breath to determine if they are indeed this year's "American Idol"! It has been a great year with great performances, and as Kris Allen has played the role of dark horse, for him to succeed in the recording business, he needs to lose.

Kris Allen has proven himself to be a talented artist. He can sing, play multiple instruments, and can translate songs into radically new interpretations. It's because of that, his ability to craft music, which proves that his survival depends on the vote going the other way.

With a loss to Adam Lambert, Kris Allen can start on his own journey of music making. He can start a career without immediate expectations and surround himself with others in the business that can help him take his gifts and translate them into a solid record. A record that doesn't pander to the whims of pop culture and the demands of instant radio play. Instead he can build on his AI experience and develop music that lends itself more towards his style.

A loss to Adam Lambert allows Kris the freedom to cast off some of the spotlight associated with the American Idol competition. Like former contestants Kellie Pickler, Daughtry, and Elliot Yameen, Kris Allen has the opportunity to forge a career where he is the master of his destiny. Few in the music industry now will turn their backs on an Idol contestant who made it into the Top 12. Finishing #2 is a boon for some hard working producer. Especially one as talented as Allen.

It also helps Kris Allen on the marriage front. Every week we see his wife cheering him on. Who knows what type of whirlwind an American Idol victory would reap in their household. How can either of them prepare for the rigors of life on the road or changes in lifestyle. With a second place finish and time to think it through, the two of them can plot their course together. That in and of itself is a good enough reason to hope Allen loses. His marriage should always come first in priority.

While nobody would ever go into a competition hoping to fall short of the goal, history has proven that winning American Idol doesn't equal super stardom. Fantasia Barrino and Taylor Hicks have proven that just because you win doesn't mean your road is paved to success. Especially if you win but have a uniquely specific musical fan base that is not the same size as the voting public who call in for you based on your personality.

With that being said, a singer like Kris Allen, one who needs to express his creativity and is more at home on stage in front of loyal fans instead of in a studio pumping out made to order pop songs, has a better chance of surviving the business by losing the AI competition. So, for my money, and Kris' I stand behind my analysis and hope that when Ryan Seacrest reads out who America voted for, I hope what comes out of his mouth is "Adam Lambert."

I'm an Adam fan, personally. I don't have anything against Kris--he fits the American Idol "mold" more than Adam does, and I wasn't too surprised when he won. I look forward to seeing where Adam and Kris go from here.
