American Idol's Casey James Cover of "Don't Stop" Falls Flat

Fleetwood Mac Song Doesn't Take Off

On American Idol Tuesday night, Casey James took on Fleetwood Mac's Don't Stop. While James played the guitar competently and his vocals were fine, there was little inspiring about his performance.

Despite the endorsement of Alicia Keys, the first mistake James made was his song selection. Don't Stop (Thinking About Tomorrow) seemed faintly dated in 1992 when Bill Clinton used it as his unofficial campaign song. At that time, Fleetwood Mac was moving (relatively) gracefully into elder statesmen and stateswomen status in rock and roll and it was the boomers' time after all.

But now, the song is 18 years older and it's not a likely choice to age particularly well. It is not among Fleetwood Mac's greatest work as it lacks the dark and foreboding subtext of Go Your Own Way, The Chain and Landslide. In fact, it was saved originally only by Fleetwood Mac itself.

Fleetwood Mac is not an easily coverable band. Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham, in particular, are really, really, really good at what they do, albeit in a narrow spectrum. James' performance showed his ability to not embarrass himself while compared to rock legends like Fleetwood Mac, but did not inspire, impress or excite.

In addition to the mediocre song selection, Casey James seemed to be signing by the numbers.

He didn't really put anything significant of his own into the song and just seemed to be a really competent cover song performer. It didn't hurt his standing exactly in the American Idol contest, but it did not help him either.

Ellen Degeneres said it best when she said, "nobody will be talking about that tomorrow".

With the clock ticking on this season of American Idol, Casey James needed to reach more. This decent cover of Fleetwood Mac's Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow was is not going to help him.

I saw where Casey's brother made Billy made a statement that Casey has been sick alot of the time with major sinus problems, etc. and I could definitely tell that his face was swollen Tues. night. AI should be ashamed for not even mentioning that he's been ill. I love you Casey, get well soon and hang in there, Baby!

He doesn't seem to be improving in his talents on the show. I believe a few weeks ago Simon said he was someone that would be heard at a karaoke bar and I believe that last night's performance was equal to that.

Casey, is a ONE TRICK PONY. He isn't that smart and is very limited. He's gotten used to getting by on his looks and that's all there is to him. He's got good guitar so he'd be better served to become a guitarist.
