The judges do not try to hide that David Archuleta is their favorite. The same rules that apply to the other contestants do not apply to him. He is allowed to stay inside of his comfort zone week after week, giving identical performances but not getting called out on it. Other contestants are not granted that same luxury.
Actually, though, David did slightly step out of his comfort zone tonight, but it was not in regards to his singing. When I saw little David step out onto the stage in leather pants, I was halfway between laughter and confusion. What was he doing? Leather pants and power ballads don't usually go together, but I'm always up for new things, so I decided to sit back and watch with an open mind. Maybe he would choose a ballad that really fit the rocker look.
David did not disappoint in his ballad selection. This evening, on Mariah Carey night, Archuleta chose the song "When You Believe." It was another song inside of his comfort zone, as it was a power ballad with a deep meaning. Archuleta normally picks a song with a message, so this came as no surprise. His tear ducts must be working in overdrive for this season of American Idol, as he makes his puppy dog eyes water over in most of his performances. This one proved to be no different.
Technically, he did a good job. He hit almost all of his notes, and he looked as if he was really feeling the words. Still, I could not stop picturing him standing in front of a church choir, waving hands in the air as he tried to get his message across. That is, if he found a church that would be okay with his leather pants. Once again, it felt as if David Archuleta was preaching to me.
Even though I wasn't in love with Archuleta's performance, I expected that the judges would praise him, and I was right in that respect. As usual, he was met with open arms. The judges, even Simon, gushed. For a show that is constantly speaking of the need to be original and different, I cannot help but be a bit put off by the judges' reactions each week to Archuleta. Yes, he has talent. I realize that, but every week, it is the same thing. Sure, the song has a different title, but the performance, right down to the awkward wave of the hand and sheepish grin, are the same. The songs are all the same tempo, and the message they deliver is close to the same. He is so afraid to step out of his comfort zone that he is becoming a complete bore.

Post a CommentWhen you are not objective in your assessment of anything, then I guess you do not qualify to make any comment about David Archuleta's talent or singing for that matter. What criteria are you using to assess David Cook? I doubt your ability to make fair decisions too. God bless.
Congratulations Ms. Amy it seems that you've got what you expected when you wrote this article. I'm proud to say that I'm a Christian and I for one enjoys what David's doing with his God-given talent.. Just wanted you to know that there's nothing wrong with David looking like a preacher every time he sings and I think he wouldn't mind that comment as well since that's also one thing he enjoys about singing being able to express what he feels and the good message that a song delivers. I for one is thankful for this boy's talent because through him we see the goodness of God, he's using his talent to spread the good news and what I just don't understand is how you put too much attention to his pants, I'm sure that having a beautiful soul is far more important that what you wear on the outside. I will be wishing you good luck with your writing and I hope you find the wisdom to change how you write, instead of concentrating on the dot in the center of a white paper let's look at the much b
David A. fan here. Did you watch the elimination show on Wednesday (Mariah Carey) night? The two Davids appear to get along quite well. Can we, the fans, not follow their lead and realize that both men are talented? When fans begin to unabashedly spew bias in the blogs and comment sections, it only makes them look worried. Cook is a great talent. Archuleta is amazing. Their fans need only dial their numbers each week, and eventually the winner will be named.
Some people can't handle the talent David Archuleta exudes. They also can't handle the fact that he wants to use his gift to deliver positive messages to the world. Is there something wrong with that???? If you have an issue with goodness or don't feel comfortable with positive messages, a pure spirit that is genuine, and the voice of an angel, you may want to look in the mirror....it's the folks that feel like they are being "preached to" and who have to bag on "leather pants" or ridiculous "sexual innuendos" in order to dirty up the image so they feel a little more comfortable in David's sweet surroundings. David is amazing and we need more kids to look up to this type of role model and the type of talent that CARES WHAT MESSAGES HE SENDS. What a breathe of fresh air!
David Cook is more of the same and the judges comments couldn't be more scripted. Don't get me wrong, they are serving a side of Jason Castro with Cook and calling Cook original!!! At least Jason is far more or
Amy, if you don't like David A., just say it. I know from the very beginning that you are rooting for David C. But that is okay. However, to say that David A sings the same genre week after week is totally unfair. David C does the same, right? Yeah, David C week after week does the same yelling, shouting, groaning. moaning, screaming, screetching and you don't empahasize that, that's ridiculous. David C tends to shout because he can't sing without being hyper, bet yah, if her tried the lower notes, he will screw it. He is a rocker that what these rockers know is only to look high (as if high on drugs), appear angry, mad, even the dead pigs will get scared.
to Amy's bodyguard- You are very welcome!
Did you watch the same show as me?
Cook was given a standing O for screaming out another song & hitting several bad notes plus he was off key & you say they praise David too much! LMAO
HE IS THE BEST SINGER OUT THERE & IF YOU SAY DIFFERENT YOU ARE WRONG because anyone with half a freakin ear can tell that!!!
To lala- Thanks for proving my point!
Blah blah blah. You seem to be very bored with David A., and feel that week after week he does the same thing. It's funny because you seem to write the same thing, week after week too! I love how American Idol turns everyone into a professional judge of talent and personality. What is with you saying he's basically getting a free pass? I didn't realize that being consistently good, and having oodles of talent was NOT worthy enough of praise. You must be an amazingly gifted and talented individual with the way you downplay David A.'s talent. Respect talent when you see it please, or put your money where your mouth is.
Hey, give the kid a break. He's only 17. Poor boy wear leather pants also get a comment.
Is this American Idol or dress competition??
