David Archuleta chose to perform Think of Me, an Andrew Lloyd Webber classic. While it was expected that he would sing that song exactly as written, that ended up not being the case. The original Think of Me would have fit nicely into the niche Archuleta has carved for himself. It is an emotional ballad that Archuleta could have delivered in his typical American Idol performance.
What David Archuleta did instead, though, proved that he can step outside of his comfort zone. He completely changed Think of Me to the point that it was not even recognizable as the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic. Archuleta took a great risk, something that he has failed to do in the past. The risk definitely paid off. While Archuleta's version of Think of Me was not as good as the original, it was still nice to see him mix things up. It was important that Archuleta deviated from his normal performance and gave the audience something different. The audience took notice to the changes in last night's performance on American Idol. Instead of Archuleta simply calling in a performance, he appeared to be a real musician.
Last night's American Idol is not going to change David Archuleta's standing in the competition. He has been, and remains, one of the front runners. His biggest threat is still David Cook, who had an amazing performance last night of Music of the Night. Both of the front runners stepped out of their comfort zones, adding a new twist to the competition. The Davids want to win, and they are upping the ante with their performances.

Post a CommentI agree that both cook and archuleta rock, just in totally different ways. This phantom rearrangement stuck in my head, and that mean's it's good because i have sung semi professionally
I HATED David A.'s "twist" on "Think of Me." Sorry, I am a huge Phantom fan and that is NOT how I want to hear that song. For me, he took a great song and made it into just another mediocre pop piece that sounds like everything else. I could care less who arranged it (David OR his Dad OR someone else)...it was awful. Some songs should be left alone and that is one of them.
Nice article Amy...Archie deserves to win.
It is amazing how many Cook fans absolutely hate Archuleta and vice versa. I am one of those few individuals who love both of them. Sometimes I am in the mood for dark and moody Cook. Sometimes I like the uplifting and passionate Archuleta. They both have amazing talent. I look forward to purchasing each of their first CDs. I may even have to pick up something from the mellow Castro and the folksy White. Are most fans so narrow in their musical tastes that they can't like multiple contestants?
Diane, don't be stupid and start making baseless accusations. No matter, David Archuleta was brilliant by mixing things up. And i can't believe that Simon didn't even acknowledge that when David A. is the only one who made a relevant performance by making a Broadway song contemporary. Now I'm thinking David Cook is overpraised.
Diane, can you say another stupid David Cook fan? Cook sucks. He is an arrogant jerk. In the end, America isn't going to vote for that. People like him right now, but when it comes down to it, they are going to go for the cute humble kid with an amazing voice.
David A did nothing on hiw own to change his song last night. Someone else did it FOR HIM. Can you say stage dad at work?
