American Idol's "Idol Gives Back" Raises Almost $45 Million in Contributions to Children's Charities in 2010

Not only did the Wednesday night special showing of 2010 "Idol Gives Back" come out on top in the ratings, but it also raised close to 45 million dollars for children's charities. The special garnished 18.4 viewers for the Fox network in the 8:00 to 10:00 pm time slot.

The two hour special was hosted by Queen Latifah and shot live from the American Idol stage in the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Ryan Seacrest served as the Master of Ceremonies. The special is aired as a telethon where phoned in donations can be made to the children's charities supported by American Idol.

This was the first Idol Gives Back since 2008 when the show was called off due to the recession. The 2008 show only drew 17.6 viewers, slightly less than this year's total.

This year's event was highlighted by various artists donating their time and giving performances for the show that gives back to various children's charities. Carrie Underwood, the winner of American Idol in 2005 was probably the most anticipated artist performing. However, other big names such as Elton John, Black Eyed Peas, Jordin Sparks, and Alicia Keys also helped to draw viewers to the show.

Special appearances were also made by artists, celebrities, actors, actresses and other well known people. Even President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama made an appearance on the show. Other notable persons making an appearance were Bill Gates, Morgan Freeman, Victoria Beckham, George Lopez and David Cook.

The whole purpose of "Idol Gives Back" is to raise money for children's charities here in the United States and other countries. Some of the money raised this year will go to the Children's Health Fund, Malaria No More, Feeding America, United Nations Foundation and Save the Children's U.S. Programs.

Net profits from the Top 7 American Idol finalist's performances downloads from iTunes are also being donated to children's charities. These figures have not been tallied at this time and are not included in the $45 million figure.

Idol Gives Back is aired along with the regular night of elimination. This week American Idol sent Tim Urban packing.

How fantastic. For some reason, Australian Idol has been dropped for this season.

Yep, I thought my eyes had wigged out too. Apparently they tried to make American Idol in title italics to stand out and didn't close the code.

  • Tricia Goss4/26/2010

Wow, that's amazing! And the italics, yes, interesting! LOL

Humm, is it just me or is everything in this article and the comment section in italics?
