American Idol's Lilly Scott: Bringing Classic Blues Soul to a New Generation

American Idol season 10 is going strong and while the series may have lost some of the excitement that previously made it appointment TV, there are some definite reasons to save space on your DVR this year. The talent is big, and the contestants each bring something special to the stage. Despite all the buzz about contestants Andrew Garcia and Casey James, Simon stated that this is a year for the women. It's hard to argue when you look at the talented ladies taking the American Idol stage this year. One notable name is that of Lilly Scott, the former sandwich maker from Littleton Colorado.

Lilly Scott, the soulful talented young singer who first impressed judges in Denver, has a solid spot in the American Idol top 20, and she's expected to go much farther than that. With a great look and greater talent it's hard to imagine that she won't go far in the competition and in her career. Scott has been singing for most of her life including a performance of the national anthem at Mile High stadium when she was only five years old. She went on to front Colorado band Varlet which has a decent following in the area with their indie, bluesy sound. Through American Idol Lilly Scott's impressive voice and style is now reaching around the world and creating a whole new fan base for the singer.

It all started with an audition in Denver that won over the judges. Obviously her performance was good enough to get her to Hollywood; however it was her amazing rendition of Ella Fitzgerald's Lullaby of Birdland that elevated her above the competition. This performance was incredibly soulful and beautiful capturing the essence of the song and serving as an excellent tribute to the Legend that is Ella Fitzgerald. Few can pull off an Ella song, and to do it such justice is truly impressive.

In addition to her musical talent, Lilly Scott gets some recognition for her style. Some describe her as punk because of her clothes and platinum blonde hair, but this description doesn't quite fit. Some say that she's an old-school throwback to folk music and style. In actuality, she is somewhat of a blend of genres. While she does have a certain classic blues style to her image and her music, she doesn't completely fit into the category of a throwback. While another contestant on AI fell short of his aspirations by simply being an imitation of 70's style, Lilly Scott does something different. She is not an imitation or a copy of her jazz and blues inspirations, but rather she personifies the soul of the music while bringing it to a new generation.

We still have to wait and see how far Scott climbs the American Idol ladder, but it will be interesting to see how her promising career develops. If you are a fan of hers or of indie blues music, make sure to check out her Ella Performance, and her songs with Varlet.
