American Idol's May 5 Show Feautres 'Rock Week' Performances

Season eight of "American Idol" has been a season of firsts and this week was no exception. It began with the theme of rock and roll, but not just any rock and roll. It was classic rock. Hen came the choice of mentor for the week - a rock icon who has been the lead guitar player for two bands and has sold 100 million albums in the process - former member of Guns 'N Roses and a member of Velvet Revolver - Slash. And things didn't stop there, during dress rehearsals part of the stage began to collapse causing rehearsals to come to a halt. As the show went live the Idols took the stage sort of winging it..

And then there were four...

Another first fir this season was the singer paring up and singing duets.

Usually the mentors stop by the Idol mansion to impart their wisdom on the "American Idol" contestants, but this week Slash had the four remaining singers join him at the Roxy and perform in true rock fashion, with his rock band and the volume cranked up.

The show opened with rocker Adam Lambert dressed out in rocker garb and rady to rock the house. And bring it he did with a rendition of Led Zepplin's "A Whole Lotta Love" that had Radny proclaiming Adam a rock star. Kara took it a step further and called Adam a rock god. Paula said Adam was a whole lotta perfect and Simon not only said it was one of his favorite performances, but that no one could top the performance.

The last girl standing Allison took on rock icon Janis Joplin with "Cry Baby". Judges agreed that Allison can sing but were not pleased be her choice of song. Simon said that he song was a little too much like the original but Paula felt that if a biopic of Janis Joplin were done that Allison should play the rol of Joplin.

After Allison came the first duet of the evening when Danny and Kris teamed up to perform "Renegade" by Styx. Judges agreed that in the case of Danny and Kris the sum was better than the parts with the duo producing some amazing harmonies. Danny and Kris admitted that the hardest part of the duet was in choosing the right song.

As the only contestant remaining who plays an instrument Kris Allen brought his guitar skills to the stage in "Come Together" by The Beatles. While the judges were not impressed with Kris' singing, guitar player Randy Jackson loved Kris on the guitar.

Danny took a chance on a song outside his zone with "Dream On" by Aerosmith. Again the judges were not overly impressed, Simon even compared the song's ending to watching a horror movie.

Adam and Allison topped off the evening with their version of Foghat's "Slow Ride". Randy said the two looked like seasoned rock sars and Paula called them a perfect blend and added that Adam and Allison should perform duets on each other's album. Simon proclaimed that Adam and Allison won the battle of the duets and told Adam that he just may have given Allison a chance at staying.

On the results show one more Idol will be eliminated and the returning Idol will be Chris Daughtry with his band. Daughtry and his band will perform the debut of his new single from his soon to be released album. Earlier this season fans saw judge Paula Abdul choreograph a dance routine for the Idols, on the Wednesday results show fans will see Paula perform. The band No Doubt will also take the stage.
