Go into any discount store which sells holiday decorations and you will see the Made in China label almost everywhere you look. The search for American made Christmas ornaments may seem futile but you can go online and find Christmas decorations which are made in the USA. I did some of the searching for you and compiled this shopping guide of online sites offering American made holiday tree ornaments. Some of these Christmas tree ornaments are crafted in unique ways; all are made in America.

American Made Metal Ornaments

Wendell August Forge was founded in 1923 in Brockway, Pennsylvania, but has its headquarters currently in Grove City, Pennsylvania. Retail stores in Grove City, Exton (Pennsylvania), and Berlin (Ohio's Amish country) allow you to see some of the handiwork. Wendell August Forge's online Christmas store features American made ornaments with images of the nativity, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, holly, Christmas trains, Bible verses, Santas, and angels. Ornaments are crafted of aluminum or bronze. Wendell August Forge comes out with a special collector ornament each year. The design for 2010 is a round medallion with a picture of a door with a wreath on it and a Christmas tree and snowshovel on either side of it. The theme is "Home For the Holidays." Wendell August Forge also makes icicle ornaments with images of Christmas stockings, candles, gifts, and lighthouses. Each ornament in the sets of three are about 4 1/2 inches long and made of aluminum. This longstanding American forge crafts Christmas plates, coasters, nativity sets, tree toppers, and serving trays, among other gift items. The intricate designs on the metal ornaments and other products from this American company are worth a look. Please note, the Basic Spirit ornaments are made in Nova Scotia, Canada, and imported.

For pewter ornaments crafted in the old-fashioned method called hand casting, look to Hampshire Pewter. Founded in 1974, the company's factory is in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, and its retail stores are in Wolfeboro and Barrington, New Hampshire. Ornament designs on the Hampshire Pewter website include lighthouses and scenes and themes associated with New Hampshire as well as traditional subjects like the nativity, Santa Claus, the twelve days of Christmas, and wintertime activities like maple sugaring and ice skating. Several of New Hampshire's covered bridges are featured in a collector's ornament series. Hamphire Pewter produces limited edition Christmas bells and ornaments and other pewter gifts and tableware. Ornaments for 2010 include the Portsmouth lighthouse, the Blair covered bridge, General John Wolfe, and the three French hens from "The Twelve Days of Christmas." The Wolfeboro facility offers guided tours of their craftsmen at work during the summer and early fall and other times of the year by reservation.

American Made Chalkware Ornaments

The chalkware ornaments created by the Vaillancourt Folk Art artists are hand-molded from antique confectionary molds and hand-painted. The studios in Sutton, Massachusetts, have been making collectibles for Christmas and other times of the year since 1984. The Sutton facilities include a Christmas Museum with examples of ornaments from each year of production and a Gallery showroom where customers may purchase Christmas decorations. Throughout the year, visitors may take guided tours through the studios and see the ornaments and other decorations being made. VFA's Blaxton Hall is the site of various gatherings and productions including a Collectors' Weekend, a Christmas Tea, and a performance of "A Christmas Carol" by Gerald Charles Dickens, great great grandson of the author. Vaillancourt Folk Art chalkware ornaments are sold in several gift stores throughout the United States and retail stores like Nordstroms and Neiman Marcus. The ornaments are highly collectible and include various versions of Father Christmas, Santa Claus, and snowmen as well as scenes from "A Christmas Carol." The studios do not make ornaments of nativity figures or angels. The ornaments which are crafted are quite expensive but unique and of heirloom quality. American Made Stoneware Pottery Ornaments

The online store The Chat Shoppe features Bujno stoneware pottery made in Lancaster County in Pennsylvania. These American made pieces range from personalized ball ornaments to nutcracker tree decorations. The Santa ornaments feature Santa as a policeman, a firefighter, or Uncle Sam. Christmas tree icicles come in pairs and are topped with Santa faces, nutcrackers, reindeer, angels, or snowpeople. When you order your Bujno Pottery Christmas ornaments, you can specify what decoration and glaze color combination you wish. The process of making one single item of Bujno Pottery requires at least four artists and eleven steps from weighing out the proper amount of clay to the final firing of the piece in the kiln. Ornaments crafted by the Bujno Pottery artists must be ordered as early as possible, preferably before Thanksgiving, to ensure delivery to the home before Christmas.
