There has been a pattern in recent ecological disasters of unprecedented magnitude. First there was news of ice-glaciers melting in Himalayas and Antarctica. Then, there were news of massive forest fires in Australia and India. Last was the massive earthquake in Haiti, killing and marooning millions.
But all these were natural disasters on which man had little or no control but this massive oil spill is entirely of man's own making. Whether it is a result of greed or carelessness, ultimate cost is being paid by the millions of flora and fauna in the oceans. While man would calculate the monetary loss, God is going to calculate the precious loss of birds, animals and plants.
What more fury this will invite, only time will tell. Add to it the loss of precious commodity of oil and we have huge disaster in hand. What is of prime importance is the realization to be dawned on all that such an accident must be prevented by all in future, in any part of the world.
Already some finger-pointing has begun but this is no time for that. All efforts must be directed to control of further damage. Let us learn our lessons from this calamity.
