In Dr. Seuss' "Horton Hears a Who", The Whos of Whoville could only be heard by the elephant character named Horton. The problem with reality is that we American taxpayers don't have a Horton on Capitol Hill or in the White House. It was not until every single Who in Whoville screamed as loud as they could that the Whos of Whoville were heard by those that would have destroyed them, their homes, and their way of life. Both sides of the Congressional aisle claim to hear us; Boehner on the Right and Pelosi, Reid on the left.
With 40 percent of the earmarks tacked to the omnibus spending bill coming from Republicans it is difficult for either side to claim the high ground here. I so hope that Bipartisan Pork is not what President Obama meant by reaching across the aisle and working with Republicans. In addition to earmarks, the types of spending are in contrast to the national belt tightening we are all supposed to be enduring. A project being a good idea generally doesn't automatically make it a good idea to fund it at this time. Americans have been asked to prioritize, but Washington is not. Can they not hear the taxpayers banging their pots and pans in Whoville?
As a retired Army veteran I am well familiar with what we called the, "GFI, good Freekin Idea", the "Good Idea Fairy", and the "Good Idea Cut-Off Time". These are terms used when the planning cycle has reached a point when no more gee-whiz, I want to impress the boss good ideas are needed; when it is time to start the action. This is not time for our Congress to try and impress their individual districts or try and prove a political point; it is time for action. No more GFIs, cut the pork and earmarks crap, and show investors that you leaders are willing to stand tough to get us through this crisis.
Who will scream and make noise for America? Words like revolution and dissent are common in chat rooms and blogs, but the majority of Americans are just asking the question, "What can I do if nobody will listen?" Patriots love America and do not want to subvert her leadership; they just want their leadership to love America too, which requires them to love the American people. Uprising in the face of turmoil and popular unrest is not something of Whoville animation. In truth, people in crisis will pick someone on whom they will place their anger and fear, leading to tragedy that we have not seen in America since our earliest years.
President Obama must show strength in leadership by standing up to not only his Boehner led political rivals on the right, but also to Pelosi and Reid. An Obama veto of this omnibus spending bill will demonstrate the kind of leadership strength that investors could follow through crisis. Otherwise, we Whos on the spec of Whoville are in for one very rough ride. Make yourself heard today; contact your Elected Officials by whatever means possible and demand they get serious about fiscal discipline.
