Americanizing Shelley - a Movie Review

Jennifer Sapa
Americanizing Shelley is 2007 direct to video comedy/romance starring Namrata Singh Gujral and Brad Raider. Namrata stars as Shalini Singh (Shelley), an Indian woman who comes to American in search of her fiancée who she hasn't seen since there marriage was arranged when they were children. Her fiancé Neil turns out to be a jerk that has no interest in honoring his word. Brad Raider plays Danny, a wannabe Hollywood agent who can get the job of his dreams if he can turn Shelley into a famous celebrity in two months.

The movie is absolutely awful. I was ready to gauge my eyes out after ten minutes. Brad Raider is one of the worst actors I have ever seen. Namrata isn't half bad but her over-played Indian accent is exceptionally annoying. Beau Bridges has a very small part. He must have promised someone a big favor because I have no explanation on why he wasted his time with this piece of crap. The only good actor in the movie was RonReaco Lee. He plays Danny's best friend, Blaine. He was funny. The director should have focused the movie on him. Then maybe I wouldn't have wanted to jump off a cliff.

I will be honest. I used the fast forward button a lot. Wait, Rewind. Is that Wil Wheaton? Yes it is. Oh my, I hardly recognized him. I spent the rest of the movie feeling sorry for him. He should have hired a better financial manager to handle his Star Trek income because he must be desperate for money.

The movie was a complete waste of time. I give it 0 out of 5 stars. If you are looking for a good Americanized Bollywood movie, watch Bride and Prejudice.

As I was saying before I got cut off - and americanized bollywood comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously (and neither should you).

Maybe you should jump off a cliff cuz clearly you have no taste. Now, i dont think that this film is brilliant by any means, there's no way i'd give it a 5 or even a 4. But it is clearly deserving of 3 or 3.5. I agree that the lead guy was the weakest link in the chain (i never heard of him) and I agree that they coulda done better on that. But i think the rest of the cast including namrata singh gujral and ronreaco lee did a terrific job. I've seen Bride and Prejudice and I'd say this is as good if not better (Infact I found out about this film on VH1 (or MTV) board of Bride and Prejudice). It's definitely better than Bend it like Beckham which was a drama in the guise of a comedy (albeit a decent one). As far as Beau Bridges and Wil Wheaton being a part of this...maybe they have better taste than some other people on this board who push numbers! Watch this for fun and entertainment...its pure fluff but worth every flaky bit of it. A very charming americanized bollywood comedy that d
