Americans Are Too Tired for Sex

How Getting Better Sleep Can Improve Your Sex Life

Ellen Brock
With chaotic schedules, work, kids, and financial stresses, it's no wonder that Americans are tired. The workdays keep getting longer and the demands on our time and energy increase almost constantly. As a result of this hectic lifestyle, over half of Americans say they have skipped or avoided sexual activity because they were just too tired.

Hectic schedules aren't the only reason for the tiredness. There are a number of factors that contribute to our tiredness and lack of sexual desire.

1. No time to wind down. Many Americans are surfing the web, watching TV, or checking their email late into the night. This leads to increased brain activity which makes it difficult to wind down. A simple solution is to spend at least an hour before bed without electronics. This will give the brain a chance to settle down for sleep and sex.

2. Constant communication. It is not uncommon for people, particularly those in demanding jobs, to sleep with a cellphone beside their bed. Waking up in the night to answer text messages or accept work calls leads to restless nights. It can also increase stress which contributes to feeling tired and lethargic.

3. Night time isn't always the best time for sex. Our culture places a lot of importance on sex before bed, but for many people, this is not ideal. If your drive is stronger after work, in the morning, or even during your lunch break, take advantage of it. There's nothing wrong with sex during the day.

4. Sleep Disorders. Many Americans unknowingly suffer from disorders like chronic insomnia and sleep apnea. If you're getting enough sleep, but still not feeling rested or you find yourself waking up numerous times throughout the night, check with your doctor and look into visiting a sleep clinic. They can run tests to determine if a sleep disorder is the cause of your tiredness.

Tiredness can push sex onto the back burner, which can cause stress and tension in romantic relationships. Finding the root of the problem is the first step to solving it and the first step to reclaiming your sex life.
