America's Amendments and What They Mean to Me

Howard Lee Bailey Jr
The amendment that is most important to me would have to be the first amendment, because it states that I have the freedom to say what I want to say, think what I want to think and to believe in what I want to believe in, and to gather in peace when and where I want, within the law. I know if the Bill of Rights was not made up or was taken away, this country would not be the land of the free. We wouldn't be able to speak our minds or stand up against things that in our minds and hearts are not right. People would have police officer's rushing into their houses at any given time. All the people that have arms (guns) would have them taken away. Their would be a lot of innocent people in prison, and because the fifth amendment was taken away, they would not even be able to get a lawyer Heck, the police officer's could just throw them straight in jail with no questions asked.

Let's take the first amendment away. That means no right to speak to, back to or against authority. That means if the police pulled you over; and you say, " I didn't do anything", they have the right of way to rough you up and take you to jail. Once you get to court you couldn't speak your mind, or explain your side of the story at all, nope no, no. Taking away the right to worship who and whatever you want to worship would be a very big step in the wrong direction. For example, if I said I believe this spoon is the holy Jesus Christ, my Lord a savior. I would be sent to jail, or be kicked out of the country or even be killed. Everybody in the United States of America would have to be under the same religion. Also seeing that the first Amendment covers so much, if you're like me and you love to just hang out with your friends on a Saturday, nope you can't do that anymore; you don't have the right. Without the first amendment, you don't have the freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly or petition man this country would seriously be, just bad.

OK, going deeper into how important the amendments are, let's say I had my own country, which amendment would I expel from the Bill of Rights, so the people would feel my wrath. Well as I tap my fingers together like Mr. Burns, from" The Simpsons", I would remove the first amendment. By removing the first amendment I stop people from basically thinking on their own. I would think for them, telling them when they can speak, what is good for them to worship, and where they can and can't be. I would also take away the second amendment, the right to keep arms (guns), to stop all those would be assassins that would really want to "settle my hash". I would also get rid of the thirteenth amendment. Yeah bring back slavery in my small country would be the biggest goal to a dictator. And last but surely not least is the eighth amendment, rights concerning bail, fines and punishments. So that means if I didn't like you, I could fine you a million dollars for throwing a gum wrapper on the ground. But of course no one in my small wasted, dictated, country would have money like that, so that person would not collect $200 dollars, they would go straight to jail.

Now getting back to United States, and away from my black hole of a country. A lot of people in the United States just don't understand how much freedom they have. We even give freedom to people that come straight from other countries. This country is great but it can be better if we stop sometimes and appreciate what the United States of America really and truly means.
