First up Prince Poppycock paired up with disco diva Donna Summer. They sang her two hits "Last Dance" and "Enough is Enough." Following the Poppycock/Summer duet was the sensational Cirque du Soleil performing the Beatles Love. In an odd match-up, Michael Grimm was joined by Jewel to sing "Me and Bobby McGee." It was a bit weird having a male voice on the female solo parts. In an even odder pairing, Fighting Gravity was the backdrop for Lionel Richie as he sang one of his hit songs, "Dancing on the Ceiling" while Fighting Gravity danced on the ceiling behind him. (But only on the instrumental breaks. Wouldn't want to take too much of the limelight from Lionel.)
Now, for whatever reason, a group of former "America's Got Talent" contestants come together to try their hand at singing. Ouch! Now my ears hurt!
Jackie Evancho takes the stage to sing "Time to Say Goodbye," a song she has already sung once this season. She is joined by her hero Sarah Brighton. Now we know who Jackie has been emulating as I see Sarah perform the same hand movements that Jackie does when she sings.
David Copperfield suddenly appears on the "America's Got Talent" stage on motorcycle in a big, opaque back-lit box. He then gets into a long rectangular box with his sock covered feet sticking out one end, his head sticking out the other end, and his hands and arms coming up through the middle. He then pulls the box together and shrinks himself until there is nothing left but the head and showing. Who needs an assistant?
Next, the rock band Goo Goo Dolls choose to sing two old favorites for viewers, but they are really there to pimp their new songs.
Now it is time for the voting results to be announced. Nick announces that Prince Poppycock has finished season five of "America's Got Talent" in fourth place. In third place is the fraternity brothers Fighting Gravity. Now first place is between two singers, the favorite operatic Jackie Evancho and the bluesy Michael Grimm. And just to keep things suspenseful, Usher takes the stage to belt out a song before the winner is announced.
In a surprise ending, blues singer Michael Grimm is announced as the winner of season five of "America's Got Talent." All we could say at my house was "Wow!" (We learned that from Howie!)
"America's Got Talent" Finale aired Wednesday, September 15 at 8:00 pm ET on NBC.
