America's Got Talent Finals: Why Fighting Gravity Deserves to Win

Don Peysum
The four remaining finalists on the hit television talent contest, America's Got Talent, gave their final performances tonight. Now it's up to America to choose who among the finalists deserves to win the competition along with the million dollar prize. In case you've been living under a rock the past week, the finalists are Michael Grimm, Jackie Evancho, Prince Poppycock, and Fighting Gravity. No doubt, all of the remaining acts are quite entertaining, and all the performers very talented, but only one act truly deserves to win it all. That act is Fighting Gravity.

To understand why, let's first examine the other three finalists. First, we have Michael Grimm, a blues/soft rock singer and guitarist. The man can definitely sing, better than most of what you hear on the radio these days, for that matter. It's pretty safe to say that regardless of the results of the America's Got Talent final vote, we'll be seeing a Michael Grim album in stores shortly. He gave a great final performance and received praise from all three judges, even Piers, who had buzzed the previous performance.

The thing is, talented as Grimm may be, he doesn't bring anything new or exciting to the table the way Fighting Gravity does. There are countless singer/guitarists with a voice comparable to his. Grimm is arguably one of the best a lot of people have heard in his genre but his act has been done time and time again.

Then there's Prince Poppycock, a classical singer with quite an interesting sense of style. While this finalist brings more originality to America's Got Talent than Grimm, at the core of his act, he's just another singer, albeit a singer with a lot of showmanship.

Poppycock's flamboyant style of dress and performances most likely aren't going to appeal to all of America. The musical genre he specializes in isn't very popular either. Also, his final act wasn't one of his best. It lacked the fun and showmanship that made him popular in the first place, according to America's Got Talent judge, Piers. One could argue Piers wasn't that impressed with Fighting Gravity tonight either but ultimately it's up to America who wins it all.

Also, we have Jackie Evancho, yet another classic singer. She's has a beautiful voice, a voice this author has never heard coming from a ten year old girl before. Given her age, she's probably the most impressive singer on the show. However, as mentioned before, singers are hardly few and far between. Beautiful as her singing may be, one has to wonder if she'd be quite as impressive if she were older. She's a young girl, who knows what her voice will sound like in a few years. She may not have the staying power of an act like Fighting Gravity.

Finally, we get to Fighting Gravity. You know the saying that you should save the best for last? Well, there's a reason the America's Got Talent finals features Fighting Gravity last. Fighting gravity brings something to the table that no other America's Got talent act ever has. Their act is so original, it's difficult to even label what it is they do. Basically, Fighting Gravity is a group of fraternity brothers (who have taken a hiatus from college to see the show to the end) who dance and perform gravity defying illusions via blacklight, all set to music. They're the kind of act you have to see to understand what it's all about. After their phenomenal performance in the finals tonight (despite the opinion of Piers), it's clear that no one deserves to win America's Got Talent as much as Fighting Gravity. There's already a show for singers; it's called American Idol. Come on, America, take value in originality and vote for Fighting Gravity!
